Longevity of Ford V10 engine.

I am looking at purchasing a vehicle with a Ford V10 engine in it. It has been used for shuttle purposes do no extended high speed driving. Oil changed every 3000 miles and has received all factory maintenance required. How many miles should I expect out of this engine?

v10 mileage

I recently began looking for a v10 powered unit to replace my 460v8-the new ford v8 is not offered as of now in the E series. You cannot find them. Why? noone wants to get rid of them...they are that good. smooth, long lasting. I finally found what I wanted, and the dealer finally met my price (after me walking away and another 3 months of time!) so i now have a v10 powered cargo E series van. it is my understanding that these are wonderful engines, but no longer to be made. too bad.
good luck

They easily will top 180,000 miles, and I've seen them with well over 200,000 still going strong. the very early 6.8's had a tendency to eat their own pistons, but that seems to have been corrected. I can't remember the last time I've seen one with galled pistons.

As for them no longer being made, it's probably more to do with the lower fuel economy (@$3 a gallon) than anything else.

I've talked with a ton of people that have had that engine; no one has said any negative things about it.

We own a 2000 Ford Excursion with V10. We use it to pull a 34' Airstream. We had to replace the exhaust manifold bolts on the left side in 2008. In 2009, we replaced the right side bolts. Other than that, we haven't even changed the spark plugs. It has 135K miles and still going strong. Drove it from Iowa to Vancouver, BC on the interstate (without trailer) on cruise control set at speed limit and averaged 16 mpg. My wife and I thoroughly enjoy using it with our Airstream.

My 2000 Excurision with V-10 has 58230 miles on it most of that pulling my Squarestream trailer. We have had no problems with it.
The only problem that I have head of is spark plugs blowing out on them,BUT I know no one that has had that go wrong.
My wife dose not like the leather seats. She said that the fabric one are more confortable on long trips.

Apparently no one has told Ford that they are no longer to be made. They still list it as one of the engines on their website. Of course I was looking in the F series. the E series is here. I have looked a little lately, and they do seem to be unusual, though.

new v8 and diesel

I tried unsuccessfully to purchase a 2010 E series with either the new gas v8 and 6 speed torqshift, or the 3 valve v10-all of which are offered in the F series. I did find a 2007 that had been sitting on a dealer's lot since 8/07 with a 2 valve v10. I discovered that in the WAGON E series(passenger), the v10 is no longer an option. So, my assumption was that the v10 would no longer be available after the 2011 year. I could very well be wrong on that, but I seem to remember reading the new gas V8 was to replace the V10. Ford is building a new diesel to keep the diesel engine under Ford mfg, again, this engine is in the 2011 F series which is being touted now. the 2011 E series has not been announced as of now.

This is interesting. If they drop the v10, a risky move in many ways. Lots of loyal Ford 3/4 ton and up customers went with big gasser due to all the problems with the diesels. Also, the rv industry must be scratching their heads. Most low to mid level Class a/b and c have the v10 since Gm dropped the 8.1. This may really change things for them. I just do not see where a 6.0 g.m can replace the v10. 6 speed might help, they need to get the torque ratings higher by a or longer stroke or a blower. The marine industry is still offering 8.1 in some new models. Go figure.

I have never understood the difference on the e series and f series 5.4 for example. Must be accessibility or cooling or something. Why would you build 2 different versions of the same thing? Maybe that is why they call it a modular design.
