Jeep Grand Cherokee as TV for 23’ Airstream?

Hi, my husband and I have purchased a 23’ Airstream. We previously had a 30’ Evergreen which swayed terribly. We are hoping that we can tow the 23’ across the prairies easily. We are looking at tow vehicles and like the Grand Jeep Cherokee or the Ford Explorer. Both of these vehicles can tow 5,000-6,000 lbs. The 23’ Airstream weighs around 4,800 and the max. weight is 6,000. Are these vehicles underpowered, especially since we enjoy the mountains and will be looking to spend some time in Colorado. Thanks for your help.

We have towed our 19' for years with various Jeep Grand Cherokees, all with V8 engines. Our present tow vehicle is a 2016 Jeep GC with the 5.7l V8 and air suspension. All of our Jeep GCs have pulled our trailer with ease, both on the flat and in the mountains. We have always used a Hensley Arrow hitch so there is no sway. Many consider a Hensley (or ProPride) to be excessive for a small trailer and too expensive. We like the peace of mind it has always given us.

For the absolute best advice, please contact the foremost expert on what will tow what length of Airstream; Andy Thompson at Canam RV in london Ontario.

You maybe surprised at what vehicles he would recommend to tow a 23'. Get the whole list and then decide what vehicle would A) be best suited for you as a daily driver for 9/10ths of the year, and B) what vehicle would tow the Airstream for the 1/10th of the year.

The Explorer is available with a 365 hp Ecoboost V6 as used in the F150. Hard to imagine that being underpowered for a 23. Agree with calling CanAm.

The Dodge Durango may be worth investigating. Compare wheelbase. Much other similar or the same as the JGC. Several folks have had good results with the JGC in several power plant variations.

The 23 is an easy tow, but much of the fun is being able to maneuver in tight spaces. How the RV handles is key there, so keep turning radius in mind.

No, the Explorer is listed at a 5000lb tow capacity, so with a 6000lb gross on the 23, it's less than ideal.

Andy has suggested the Jeep 4dr wrangler tows well. He had the opportunity to drive one recently.

All of these vehicles have a high center of gravity due to the SUV design. If you can find a lower CG solution, it would help towing stability considerably. The alternative that helps is a suspension that is stiff for towing, but compliant to road surface for superior traction.

Good luck with your investigation. Pat
