Jeep Gladiator

Anyone tow with the new Jeep Gladiator yet? Jeep claims a 7000+ lb towing capacity.

https://www.jeep.com/gladiator/utility.html

Saw dozens of them yesterday at the Overland Expo in Virginia. Nice looking vehicle, though overpriced IMHO.

asking sincerely, how does a weight distribution hitch offset payload capacity on a tow vehicle?

1700 lb payload would be adequate for most people. More than most F150s.

Sorry, I thought you're post implied that you were not impressed with the payload of the Gladiator. The WD hitch moves some of the tongue weight of the trailer to the front axle to keep the loads on the front and rear axle within limits. It also maintains the handling characteristics of any tow vehicle by moving some of the tongue weight to the steering axle rather than have it rest totally on the rear axle. Most everyone knows that a WD hitch does not change the payload of any TV, that is not it's purpose.

thanks! i really appreciate the further explanation. while i do think that 1700 lbs. of payload capacity is a little short, i never understood how a weight distribution hitch works to make towing easier. i definitely think i need to know more on this now.

IMHO as the OP stated, "over priced". I'm sure you could spec out far more capable TV's for a lot less money.

Cheers

We have a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon LE that tows our 22FB Caravel like a champ. It has a Blue Ox weight distribution hitch that makes towing an Airstream easy. Sometimes I almost forget it’s back there.

With the right drivetrain and stiff rear springs it can do quite well for a small truck. Certainly can tow a 25' with no complaints. Going over that to a 27 or more is not good idea. Some will do it and then may come here to brag about their recklessness.

We see they are coming out with a V8 for the Jeep Wrangler maybe the Gladiator could have one in the future.

I have a Max Tow Gladiator Sport. Waiting on a Flying Cloud 23FB (delivered in Jan, hopefully).

I have been through the numbers many, many times... Based on the CAT weights I got for the truck and the published information from AS (and adding some weight per the comments on the forum) - I think that this combo will be a good fit. I may need to replace my 35” tires to decrease weight and to ensure the AS TW keeps me below my GVWR (6250) and payload (1565 per the sticker on the door). But, I also think that I can move items from the bed to the TT and achieve the same end. Once I get the trailer and get some CAT weights I will share.

If they do it will likely reduce the towing capacity, not increase it. The 6.4 Hemi weighs a lot more than the 3.6, and the Gladiator with the 3.6 is already at its towing limits due to cooling capacity.

No Problem Here!

I tow my 2021 Caravel 20 (5,000 lbs) with my 2021 Gladiator Willys (6-speed) with ease!

I use a Blue Ox WDH and Curt's Echo brake controller. Everything works without any issues.

I have modified my Jeep and Airstream though to help it out...

• Teraflex Alpine RT suspension with fast-adjust Falcon shocks
• DV8 in-bed tire carrier
• Lithium-ion batteries

The modified suspension allows me to firm up the rear shocks which eliminates bounce and helps the stability - along with the WDH.

Moving the tire ahead of the axle took 110 lbs of the hitch effectively. And, the lithium-ion batteries removed 60+ lbs from the hitch (in lieu of the AGM batteries that WERE in the box).

It rides nice and pulls out quite well from a stop. A BIG future mod coming soon will be 4.56 gears.
