High Tow Vehicle Solution - Pattens

Before the auto put the horse out of business as a daily driver women routinely wore "pattens" on their feet. These were wood or metal and were designed to protect a woman's delicate shoes (and feet) from stepping in horse apples.

They also raised her 2 to 6 inches off the ground.

Instead of Pattens, how about using a single left foot platform sandal to make entering and exiting my tow vehicle a lot easier? It's cheaper than getting new 2 step running bars. Of course a piece of scrap 4 x 4 and a rope to pull it into the back seat area could work too.

Looking for a cheap solution - and raising the earth seems a lot cheaper than lowering the GMC.

I have running boards - still pretty darned high. Really NOT fun at my current camp - ground slopes away from truck - down about 5 inches. Those super hoops would be perfect if there were a way to hang them down from my existing running boards.

How do people who are only 5 foot 1 inch ever get into a big truck. I'm vertically challenged at 5' 6".

I'm looking into auto-retract step retrofits. Wife has issues with the first jump to the ground and climbing to her seat in some sites.

I suggested a rope ladder, but that was a non-starter 😀😀😀

Trouble with using something external is how do you get the portable step into the cab once you are in?

Maybe get someone to fabricate or weld on longer brackets for your running board that allow the running boards to be lower to the ground.

You just need to consider entry/exit from your truck as an exercise that builds flexibility and strength. Good warm up exercise for hiking Angels Landing in Zion NP.

I have actually seen a lady use an old milk crate. It had a rope tied to it so she could retrieve it once she was in the truck. Simple, cheap solution...... And a great conversation starter!

When my wife had her second knee operation we bought add on power running boards for our 2500 Dodge. A very good decision for both safety and ease of use. She uses the truck for everyday use so she has to climb in and out a whole lot. I was afraid any small step or crate would eventually tip and cause a fall. The power boards are wider and flatter than the bars they replaced and are at a much better height for entry. So far they have worked for 3 years with no problems. We are both in our 70's and it is nice to be able to get in and out of the truck safely.

I have been told that the AMP steps go much lower than the standard running board. Expensive but folks really like them.

Dear FA, 5' 6 is taller than a lot of folks. We have the standard grab handle in our Super Duty that is very helpful for pulling oneself up into the seat. So maybe a well positioned grab handle would be an alternative to a step. Airstreams have had them for years by the door.

I think the GM trucks ride a bit lower than the Ford or Ram. Advantage Paula. And I bet you can find a bolt on step that will be low cost and work well for you.

Hi, well you just had to have a bigger truck and that's just what you got. It probably sits about 4" to 6"s higher than your F-150. Higher center of gravity too. Send it to a suspension shop and have it lowered a bit. If done correctly it will handle better and you might be able to get in and out of it too. Check out the SUV's and trucks that the Police use; They sit lower for better handling. They use a combination of suspension mods and tire and wheels to do this.
