Fuel mileage, F250 6.7 diesel

Just got back from a round trip dropping my 25 FC FBT off for some minor warranty work at Colonial in NJ, 3 hours each way from Maryland.

Towing with my ‘22 Super Duty 6.7L. All highway, modest traffic. Kept it at 60-65 mph towing on the way up, 65-75 mph (not towing) on the way home.

15.0 mpg going and 25.0 mpg returning.

Very pleased. I love this truck.

For contrast, 2021 F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid with 25 GT FBT. 11.5 mpg 60 to 65 mph towing and 25 mpg 70-75 mph not towing. As expected your diesel does better towing. Other upside of a diesel is you get to go through the diesel lanes at the truck stops but balancing that is all the DEF stuff and cost.

After 10 years of problems with SuperDuty diesel DEF and DPF problems I am liking being back to gas again.

We've experienced 14 mpg overall while towing over the last year. Non towing we get 19-20 mpg with our diesel F250. Overall very pleased!

We get the same mileage with our 2020 F350 Powerstroke. Towing our 27FB we get 14.5 mpg at 65 mph and around 20 mpg not towing on the freeway. We have had no issues with Def or any engine issues. 2020 was the first year with the new 10 speed transmission. The engine brake works well. We used to tow with a Ford Expedition and got around 11 mpg.

Hi

Switch to a 30' that weighs 10,000 pounds and get some hills involved ( PA Turnpike to Pittsburg maybe ....), MPG will be around 13 when towing at 65 to 70 MPH.

My annoyance with modern diesels are the failure modes of both DEF dispensing and DPF clogging. In both cases I have experienced limp modes with failures of these systems in SuperDuty diesel trucks. The engine and the truck was operating fine but the EPA penalty for malfunctioning after treatment is limp mode jail. Fair warning to those towing big loads with SuperDuty diesels, the DPF will clog much faster operating the engine continuously under higher loading. The ash deposited is proportional to the fuel burned. You can clean or replace the DPF but often the failure will be in some inconvenient place where you are placed in limp mode.

ok

I guess I win the towing contest with a flying cloud 27 towed by a cayenne diesel. I get 18mpg while towing and 35 mpg not towing!

Thanks lad especially for reminding me how much I miss my F250 6.7L TD. Trailering our 23’ International Serenity was always a “piece of cake” no matter the terrain. My only issue was the occasional camp site in state campgrounds wher the combined length of the vehicles made getting settled more challenging.

Don’t Believe the lie o meter it must be out of calibration Towing a 30 lifted 3 inches for us would be 11.1- 13.1 towing heavy at 65. once towing down a sight grade we got 14-5 Then the Mts up took that back to a humble 9

16-21 non towing.

Maybe with a tail wind going home from Vegas to Florida I can get the 13.1 back.

Exactly

With a 25 ft much better mileage lift a 30 ft and mileage drops. But pulling a Hill or Downhill for miles that Diesel with Engine brake makes me say to heck with mileage enjoy the ride. No engine screaming for mercy

It would be nice if folks reported if this is hand calculated or lie-o-meter, and if theirs is single cab, crew cab or supercab, long or short bed and 4x4 or not. Also keep in mind a one time fill does not get a very accurate average, that usually takes at least 10 or so fillups, hand calculated. Fuelly is a good way to get an average and has a field for notes which can be useful, and with the Acar app you can enter the info right into your phone.

Hi

Ok, the truck is a Supercab with an 8 foot bed. There is at least 2,000 pounds of payload in the truck, past whatever is in the trailer. The trailer is close to, but below 10,000 pounds. Truck has the FX-4 package on it and the 10 speed transmission. Numbers are round trip, fill the fuel tank numbers. At least on my F250 and F350, the dashboard indicator for trip fuel miles has always been very close. If it's off by more than two tenths on MPG that is unusual.

DEF wise, it seems to need a jug of the stuff about every 4th fill up. That's probably 2 gallons of DEF for every 150 gallons of fuel when towing.

MPG vs Repair Costs.

Had a 2014 GMC Duramax. Worked fine until I hit 122k. Ended up replacing almost everything on the DEF/DPF system $6k. Had to wait a month for a new DPF filter. Truck was in and out of the shop for 45 days. Issue turned out to be the control module for the DEF injector was not pushing enough DEF fluid at high RPMs ie going over Stevens Pass towing a trailer ($900 replacement). Coming back from New Mexico, the truck slammed into limp mode 35mph in the middle of no where. Limped into a Ford Dealer and they diagnosed issue with the 9th Injector not spraying enough diesel into the DPF burner to get to 1200 degrees. Had a 132K on the truck and the injector replacement was $800. 2 week wait for the part. Ended up buying a new 2021 Ford F350 truck to get home. Can't say the cost savings on fuel consumption really mattered.

what rear gear ratio do you have? Wondering if the 10 speed trans would be compatible with 3:31 opposed to 3:55?

Our 2017 ave'd 11.4 mpg over 7,000 miles, the 2015 ave'd 12.4 over the same mileage, waiting on the new one

2021 GMC 1500 Denali, 6.2 gas, 10 speed, 2022 FC 25 RBT, 6,900 pounds, 3" lift, 16" Michelin Ribs.

The first fuel stop from Denver to Orlando was in Abilene, KS. I set the cruise on 65 and got 13.4 by hand. The computer was showing 13.2. This was pretty consistent for a nearly 8,000-mile trip covered over the month of September.
