Am working up the numbers for the F350 and the Tundra trade in...

What I had included taxes so have to recalculate.

Trading used for new isn't really an accurate way to compare the numbers, IMO

That came after, going from 23' to 33' more space equals more weight and...

Which resulted in the realization of the first part of the thought, maybe need bigger truck

The $32,500 is the 'residual' value, then... of a Tundra that pulled a 25 foot Airstream. I could have sold it on Craigs List but then would have had to pay additional Sales Taxes on the $32,500 in Colorado for State, County, and RTD taxes. I did not need the Tundra and paid about $13,000 to use it for four years.
*******

Comparing 2012 Tundra purchase to 2016 F350 purchase, less the trade in of Tundra:

- 2012 5.7L Tundra Crew Max: $45,499 paid 04-06-2012

- 2016 F350 Diesel 4x4 Crew Cab Lariat Kings Ranch: $64,326 'Special Price’, $599 Dealer handling fee added
- 2016 F350 Balance: $59,676 (after rebates)
- 2012 Tundra Trade In: $32,500
- 2016 Unpaid Balance Due: $27,176, 06-29-2016 ($59,676)
- (F350 was manufactured 12/2015 with 27 miles on odometer) (Diesel MSRP $8,480 part of total)

After the 'shell game' the price paid after trade in was $27,176, difference after Trade. They also 'tossed in the rubber bed mat and rubber mats for the front and back seats. If this seems confusing, you bet. We were concerned more with the settled price, the trade in for the Tundra and the bottom line of amount due after any phantom discounts. The trade in value was increased at time of trade to make numbers work. I could not find the window sticker for the MSRP price.

The dealership did not allow anything for the Tundra's Snug Top, so I traded it in to the Snug Top dealer off the price we agreed upon, less $600. The Ford Dealer said if the Snug Top was left on the Tundra and on the lot... it appears to be a SUV. (Beats my understanding.)

Snug Top: dealer told me same thing; said they typically will remove them from the PU's trade ins, as most folks don't want them. Crazy...this dealer had quite a few they were storing "out back" somewhere...other dealer I talked to here in TX said they get rid of them as soon as they take in the trade...

Wonder if toppers/canopies has more to do w/where one lives? Being from the Pacific Northwest snow/rain, many trucks have them up here.

They're just not a good selling point. Trucks look sportier without them. Some look like condominiums with all the windows.

All my trucks have had a cap on them, but next one will be cap free.
That said I will plan to have a folding cover, which have now been shown to keep items in the bed "relatively" dry and away from prying eyes.
One friend said his keeps everything bone dry, except when he goes through a car wash.

Very happy with Xtang Tri-Fold covers. Had on my F150 and now on my F250. Very versatile and I can easily install myself in few minutes. Secure when closed and no water issues.

The folding flat covers seem to be very popular, and lighter. Cargo can be stowed away without anyone being able to look through a window.

The advantage of the topper is for sheltering extra cargo, if needed, and If you bring sleeping bags it is off the ground and you do not need to bring a tent along for cooler elevations.

Even though we have an Airstream, it is nice if you want to get a bit further into the 'bush'.

Interesting, understand canopies are not a selling point. I guess I have only thought of trucks being sporty when sitting on the ground, chopped tops, and shaved door handles. Blowers sticking 6" out of the hood are pretty cool. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Safe travels
