Chime in...Pros ? Cons? V10 or 6.0PSD? Im looking at a 2005...

I tow a '73 26 ft Land Yacht with a v-10 Excursion. Works great. You'll pay less for the gasser probably, and less for gas, but in the long run the desiel will probably last longer. There are all kinds of debates here and all over the net re: gas vs. Diesel. Good luck.

Just curious?? Why are you moving away from the 1996 Chevy IMPALA SS and getting into a big SUV? Do you need the extra cargo room?

Love my Excursion V-10. Very comfortable and roomy for us and 2 kids. I have the 2005 limited and have had no problems, milage is about 65,000 now. Towing to Florida from CT and back we got 10.8 miles per gallon.

Do a search for Ford 6.0 Diesel Problems and you might be more inclined to go with the V10. The Ford V10 is used in a lot of gas powered motor homes. The gas mileage is usually not as good as the diesel. The V10 engine does have decent torque and power for towing. Oil changes and general maintenance are considerably less for a gas engine. The Ford 7.3 diesel in the earlier Excursions were almost bullet proof.

The 6.0 is commonly known as the 6 leaker. It was the worst mistake Ford ever made. All you need to do is look at the number of TSB's(Technical Service Bulletins) for the 6 leaker and you won't touch one with a 10' pole. On the other hand, the V-10 engine is about bullet proof. The very best years for the V-10 started in 2005 as that was the year that Ford added the TorqueShift transmission, which is also bullet proof. Look for a V-10 and stay away from the 6 leaker, even if it has warranty left.

I have the v10 in my 2000 excursion. I am at 171,000 and have had no issues at all. I tow a 34' limited.
The 7.3 turbodiesel is a great engine if you can find one (it would be in an earlier model than an 05)

I have had two 7.3's, a 1997 and a 2002, and they were both good engines, but they are not without their flaws, and high maintenance expenses. As far as rebuilding, the diesel heads all say "their" diesel will last them 300,000 miles or more. Maybe, but most don't for one reason or another. A rebuilt diesel engine, even a 7.3 will cost you 2-3 times what a rebuilt V-10 will cost. A rebuilt injector system or new HPOP will run you almost $2,000 alone, not to mention new injectors, glow plugs, etc. Alot of the earlier 7.3's had a bad habbit of quiting due to CPS and bad wiring just under the valve covers. Cummins have their problems too, especially cracked exhaust manifolds, bad injector pumps(and don't EVER run a Cummins out of fuel!!), and a host of other maintenance issues. Diesel heads are all sold on their diesel engines, but a good gasser will go as far without all of the major issues associated with diesel engines and with easier,cheaper maintenance.
