F250 vs. Silverado HD?

Any real difference? Towing globetrotter 25FBT with pro pride hitch.

No difference really. Comes down to personal preference with the design. Both are very good trucks. With propride you are super rock solid.

Have fun out there!

I’m in the Sierra camp, but Ford does have its fans.

I like my F350. One of the biggest differences for me was the 2017+ Ford Super Duty having a aluminum body. I don't like rusty body panels.

You missed one…

Three years in a row Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year (1500, HD then TRX).

I was a GM certified mechanic and through I wanted a GM then took a RAM for a spin. Ended up with a RAM HD 2500 and love it.

It’s the only HD truck available with rear coil springs (or air suspension). You should take a look before you buy. YMMV

I owned a 2016 High Country 2500HD. I absolutely loved the truck, got rear ended sitting in a traffic jam by some guy driving a Porsche with 2 poodles in the front seat not paying attention to the traffic being completely stopped. He ran into a Jeep, knock the Jeep into me, and knocked me into a Range Rover.
His initial response as he jumped out of his Porsche was… “my dogs have to pee, I’ll be right back”. I can’t possibly make this up.
That put me on the hunt for my next vehicle. Drove by a ford lot and saw a brand new 250 platinum sitting on the lot. Took it for a test drive and made the purchase the next day. I kept that vehicle until I learned more about payload and the platinum trim level. Needless to say, I traded that one in for a 2021 350 Platinum to handle larger trailers without issue/worry.

IMO the Chevy drove much smoother and the ride was better. The ford 250 and 350 felt identical in handling to me. The steering was tighter than the Chevy and more responsive which I like. All of the bells and whistles (technology) coupled with the usability of the features pushed me to staying in the ford. I really don’t think you’d loose in either vehicle. Take them both for a test drive and make the decision.

I have recently looked at and driven both - a 2022 F350 and the 2022 3500 Denali. Have owned both prior as a 3/4 ton, and decided the newer Chevy/GMC does really have a cheap interior and uncomfortable seats for long rides, and it’s towing dynamics are just ok. The 2023 Chevy/GMC will have some of the upgrades of the 1/2 ton Chevy trucks, and the F250 for 2023 will be a body refresh and have other upgrades as well.

Putting all of that in perspective, the new Rams are far nicer and all around better than both IMO. I have owned a new Ram 3/4 ton diesel and a 2022 1 ton Ram. Ride quality, interior, engine/transmission and everything else was better for towing than the competition. I also tow other trailers beyond travel trailers, but if it was a travel trailer only it would still be a Ram.

https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/f...n-test-review/

You really can’t go wrong with any of the three, but PM me if you have any questions about the Ram 3/4 or 1 tons.

The F-series franchise has been the top selling truck brand now for 45 years. Buyers have a choice and vote with their dollars. Super Duty alone would rank somewhere in the Fortune 500 list. For good reason.. the other OEMs keep trying but still come up short. But hey, I'm certainly biased...

Coke vs. Pepsi vs. Dr. Pepper

All three popular soda choices. All three will likely quench your thirst. (But only one has recipes for being served hot, afaik.)

Ford has the highest warrantee writeoffs in the industry by a large margin, it’s such a problem that Jim Farley is saying they have to do something drastic soon. They brought in an outside expert who found a major issue is the culture of finger pointing and blaming rather than just trying to fix the problems root cause. Don’t know about their trucks specifically but having been a big corporate engineer for decades will tell you that the quality of the culture results in the quality of the engineering (Conways Law is a version of this).

Anyhow I’d go GM, I have engineering friends who have worked for them and it’s the opposite of Ford - notice they push the chief engineer out front on new releaess. With the HD refresh on the Silverado I’d go for that. For my retirement I can get whatever I want, so passed on the Lightning and Ford in general, and would get the HD if the new Silverado EV wasn’t ready (looks like it is). I’ve heard anecdotally that when you do need repair work Chevy availability - whereever you are - is on top.

FWIW -

Anyone cross-shopping these trucks really, really, really needs to drive all three back to back (same weekend, etc.) and go from there. The big reviews are spot on, but nothing will substitute for a test drive.

When I drove all three 2022s (1 tons) and drove all three in 2019 (3/4 tons), the GMC (Denali) was a distant third to the other two in almost all respects. The inside was way cheaper (hard plastics and dumbed down) than the Ford and Ram, and the seats were flat out uncomfortable. Overall, the Ram had the best value for the money and had the nicest interior of all three by a large margin. F250/F350 has more gadgets, but also had a significantly rougher ride (especially the Tremor package). Fords seem have been the most expensive of the three when maxed out, with the Ram second and Chevy/GMC third.

2023 refresh may be different for the GM and Ford offerings, but never having owned any Dodge/Chrysler before I was very surprised with my first Ram and liked it so much I bought another one.

Yeah I guess I’m odd - I’ll do that last after investigating every bit of engineering and culture that created it. Took this approach with my grand piano, as it happened I was traveling for work and could try pianos all over the world, and after finding what was the best engineered piano, the auditions just told me that what I wanted was a 12’ Fazioli in Stuttgart that I couldn’t afford and didn’t have the space for

The only point I’d make is that a purchase like this is more than just the momentary impressions you get from test drives - but agree those are valuable too.

Not odd, just different.

I’m not taking about a 5 min dealership parking lot spin, but a solid 15-30 minute street and highway shakedown with both me and my wife driving.

Not so easy earlier this year to do with little inventory on the lot, but that has now changed. Lots of ordered trucks from the last 6-18 months showing up with failed financing, higher prices, tighter credit and people having changed circumstances. Their loss will be your gain and there are now trucks on lots to test drive.

Of course you do all of your research first, but not sure how people buy a car or truck without driving it first for an appreciable amount of time on a legitimate test drive.

Interesting take on things, and quite different from what I have heard in my discussions with the service manager at the Chevy shop that works on my Suburban. I've talked to him many times about upgrading from my 1999 Suburban to a new 3/4-ton Chevy pickup, and he has done everything to dissuade me other than say it outright. My impression is that he's less than impressed with the current generation of products from Chevy. But, he's in a position to only see the problems with the trucks he sees in the shop, which are all Chevys. He's not in the Ford shop looking at their problems, just like your Ford guy is not looking at the Chevys.

In the end this is a highly subjective thing, and when reading multiple forums about this it seems that there are people firmly in each camp. Even with a purely objective testing like Consumer Reports does you wouldn't have the full story, because a vehicle with the fewest problems on paper still might not be comfortable for a particular driver or meet his/her needs.

I’ve had 8 (1 GMC, 7 Chevy) GM trucks over the years. 6 of them had issues.
I’m on my first SD, had it for five years now. This is the longest I have ever kept a vehicle. I had one squirrel related problem, zero Ford related problems.
It just keeps on doing everything I want it to do.

Greetings from the Florida Panhandle

We have always used Chevys. We are now on our third Silverado Duramax. Prior to that we towed Lucy with two 3/4 ton Suburbans.

One of the reasons that we stick with Chevrolet is that the only new car dealer in the county that we live in is the Chevrolet dealer up in DeFuniak Springs. Also, I like the looks of the Chevrolet trucks better.

As far as performance goes, Ford is probably as good as the Chevrolet.

We special order our trucks, simply to get them equipped the way we want. Ford offers more flexibility when ordering where GM and Dodge both require ordering a package to obtain certain options. Another very important area is service. We have never had a problem finding a qualified dealership to service our trucks on the road, actually a couple have been simply outstanding. At home we use a Ford dealership that sells only Ford trucks and has excellent service and techs, but will add that is always subject to change, good mechanics are rare and seem to be contrary. Drive all of them, talk to owners then make your decision, they all build good trucks.
Now for the bad news, we've been waiting on our ordered Ford truck for going on 8 months!

I wouldn’t count on RAM’s warranty either. I traded a perfectly good ‘12 RAM 3500 on an ‘18 RAM 3500 because the Warranty had expired (although I hadn’t had any claims on either my ‘09 or ‘12) and they denied a claim last year when the ‘18 was still under Warranty ($6,000 out of pocket). I have no reason to lie, I already paid the bill but they were wrong.

Needless to say I didn’t buy their worthless Extended Warranty and I will never buy another RAM.

Just my $.02…
