It's good to hear the praise for the newer F-150's. I'm a little over a month away from my first mountain experience, and my level of apprehension is going down.
My 2006 Lincoln Mark LT, is the same as an F-150 King Ranch, without the cowboy accents. In 2006, the F-150 King Ranch with the HD towing package was rated to tow up to 9,000 lbs. My Mark LT with HD towing package, is rated at 8,900 lbs, which I found out is because of the 20" wheels, instead of the standard 18" wheels.

which now have fat vented discs all around...
the newer 150s are rated UP to 10,500lb towing (11k this year ?) and have gcwr of nearly 16,000 lbs.
these babies will tow a LOT of airstreams...

I have a 1990 F-150 w/ 302 which I will be towing my Argosy 24 with now. The 302 EFI puts out a whopping 185 hp. It's going to be a big change from towing with my 04 Ram 2500 w/hemi. I plan on taking the scenic routes and driving slow, see ya when I get there kind of speed. I do plan on replacing the front rotors with slotted and drilled rotors w/ ceramic pads for some extra braking power.

If I were going to tow with an older F-150 (and I did with an '88 model) I'd try to find one with the 300 c.i. (4.9L) straight six. It's a truck engine, designed from the get go to be used in a truck. The 302 is a car engine, and actually has considerably less torque than the six. With the 4.9, the F-150 makes a great tow vehicle. The 351 is a good puller too, but it's not easy to find in a 150 and gets from fairly poor to horrible gas mileage.

Hi
What axle ratio and tire size do you have on your F150?

Hi, Journalist. The 300 CI six, like the 460 V-8, were such great engines so Ford decided to discontinue them. Seems like whenever a product is too good they get rid of them. More parts and service sales for some of the newer engines.

I can't resists talking about the 300 Ford Truck 6 cylinder. Maybe...just maybe the best motor EVERY in a truck. Not the most powerful of course..but they do have a lot of torque. Honest folks...you can't wear one out. They had great oiling characteristics. Well balanced..I had one that was used as a long haul in a One Ton Van and it had 624,000 miles on it when we GAVE it away. It had never..I repeat never had the value convers off it. Granted most of them miles were hiway and sometimes 350 miles a day...but what an engine. My son has one in his 95 half ton and it has 235,000 miles on it and it still only uses half a quart of oil between oil changes. Ford quit making the motor because emission standards would be hard on it.

Don't know if you meant me so just in case. 355 rearend and 225/70/15.
I had a 76 ford w/300 straight six and it was a stump puller but the 302 is also a very good motor that I believe will do the job for us just fine. Best motor in a truck would be a toss up for me between a Mopar slant 6, Mopar 318ci V-8 and the Ford 300 straight 6.
