F150 Ecoboost Owners With Problems

I have one of these, and love it. I have yet to see a post by a owner that doesn't really like their truck. Every nay sayer I have seen that has posted owns something else, or knows more than any current owner of one of these trucks, and hopes for bad things down the road, even though they haven't driven one, let alone towed with one. They are just stuck with what they purchased, and hope ill will for F150 Ecoboost owners.
Any owners have any problems? Please, only respond if you actually own this truck and have a problem. Or if you actually own one and like it, how has it worked?
This should help some that are thinking about this truck. I have had it since March, towed a bit, drive it a lot, and am very pleased with the purchase.

Greg, I noticed that to, what is that about? I saw some fellow touting how good a dealer add on turbo or blower what ever it was for a Tundra is. Thats what I want some guy at a dealer wrenching on my new truck to make it equal to the competition. I guess engineering an engine from the ground up designed for a specifie purpose isn't the way to go. Whatever. Oh yea and computer doesn't compute the mileage correctly or some such BS.

Love mine good mileage, good ride, very quick, dose what I bought it for. I drove all the other brands except GM and didn't find any one worse that the other just like the Ecoboost better. My second choice would have been a Tundra, I don't buy GM and haven't in years.

Jim,

I'll step up to the bat and say I was the one disputing the fuel economy numbers from the dash computer. I know that if you just take a look at the fuel mileage numbers, reset and look again, they can be way on the high side of reality, depending on driving conditions at that specific time.

I know on my truck, yes a GM, if I use the Driver Information Center for the mileage, even at the end of the tank, it is wrong....always on the high side. So, when on a trip, I manually calculate the mileage at the end of every tank, and it's always lower than the DIC.

I'm not against the Ford EcoBoost engine, and to the contrary I'm excited about anything that will get us better mileage. However, the numbers that you actual users have stated, only show improved mileage when the truck is driving unloaded. Not that that's a bad thing, it just shows to me the engine is not the panacea Ford has hyped. I've seen no mileage stated that improves towing mileage over a normal gasoline engine rig, much less a Diesel.

I've heard it said men will lie about sex and fuel mileage. Yes, your mileage may vary.

Steve, thanks for the clarification. Steve I can tell you I knew from the get go that I would not see any improvement when towing nor did I expect to. The dealer did not give me that impression that I would nor did I see and ads stating that I would, are there any? Has anyone made a claim they are getting better mileage towing? I went in and gave him the stock number of the truck and purchased it, the salesmen didn't know it was sitting on their off site lot. I really wanted the color and the trim level the EcoBoost was a bonus.

My computer on my truck seem to works perfectly, I look at it everyday but then again I am not trying to prove otherwise. To be honest I don't care enough about fuel mileage to recalculate it or lie about it. To infer that I would lie even with a smiley face added is rude and offensive. I can tell you my fuel bill has be cut almost in half but then again I don't spend my time counting pennies to get the exact percentage. I don't tow all that much so the highway saving are what I am looking for and getting.

In today's market you would have to work really hard to buy a bad truck, it really boils down to what you prefer, just be sure it will meet your towing needs.

The advantage of the Ecoboost for me is the torque provided from the turbos while towing through the mountains. After 4000 miles towing from Santa Fe to Glacier NP and back, the truck exhibits absolutely no lag from 4,000' flat lands to 13,000' passes. Fuel mileage while towing is average, 10-12 mpg, but much better when not towing, especially with the power of the turbos. I also tow with a V10 turbo diesel Touareg, and I am convinced that turbos are the best vehicles for towing in the mountains. But I would rather have a factory warranty than risk voiding everything with a bolt on turbo charger.

Jim, I'm sorry if you understood my joke to be anything other than what it was, as joke.

My whole post was to say fuel mileage cannot be accurately stated without averaging the mileage from several tanks over a long trip, and even then it can be different on another trip because of conditions.

Ford 150 Eco Boost

I traded in a 2009 F-150 with 5.0l V8 for a 2011 F150 with Eco Boost. I noticed right away the improved torque. I recently completed a 4700 mile trip to Idaho from Texas towing my 2007 Airstream Classic 27'. There was no difficulty anywhere in towing. I could accelerate even on climbs in the mountains. I averaged 11.3 mpg for the trip. I did have a problem with the transmission which blew a seal, through out all the fluid and burnt out the transmission. Ford installed a new transmission. Other than that, it is a great truck.

This information exchange is good, but I think it is in the wrong place. It should be over here: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f463...ost-74084.html

Comparison of V-8 vs Eco Boost

I wanted to provide some comparison numbers. I had a 2009 Ford with 5.0 liter V-8 and towed a 1996 21' Sovereign (Gross weight about 5800 lbs) and got on a long trip with mountains in New Mexico and Colorado about 10.6 mpg. I now have a 2011 Ford with 3.5 liter V-6 Eco Boost and just completed a long trip with mountains through New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho and return to Texas. I was pulling a 2007 27' Classic (Gross Weight of about 9500 lbs). I averaged 11.3 for that trip. I never had any problem pulling in the mountains. The torque in that engine is amazing.

This is something I just don't get. If you dare read other trailer forums you will quickly happen upon the "Tow Vehicle" page. Post after post discuss chipping your new diesel engines. These guys pay $50K or more for a brand new truck and then mess with the electronics by adding after market chips. Of course they all claim these huge increases in power and mileage to justify their expenditures. You can also read where some of the chips cause major issues. Wouldn't you think that the professional engineers have found a way to get the most out of the engine and do it safely?

I am waiting for reports on the Eco-Boost performance after a year or two under heavy use. I think Ford has come up with a great idea here but I would like to know how a boosted engine holds up over time.

Don't know for sure, but I think most of the "professional engineer's" time these day goes into making the vehicle help meet the govenment mandated average fuel mileage requirements while still passing the government mandated emissions requirements, all the while with the objective in mind of producing a vehicle the public will actually purchase.

It must be a difficult task to accomplish.

I own a 2014 F-150 Lariat and have 15,000 miles with 5,000 miles towing my A/S 25FB. I have had zero problems with any part of the truck. No weather too bad, no hill to steep has hinder my towing. This has been the best truck I have owned and the first Ford. I was a GMC guy for years.

2014 ecoboost crewcab with 18,000 miles. Only about 1000 miles towing a 23d FC. Tows great. Only issue for me is when driving in rain on the interstate for prolonged periods of time it has gone into limp mode while accelerating. Once while accelerating onto the interstate and once while passing a semi that was losing his tire. Dealership couldn't find anything wrong. Truck shutters and maintains speed while in limp mode though. So it's not a sudden deceleration or anything. Probably opt for the 5.0 next time. Still like my truck though. Getting about 17 all around and 20 highway.

Fair enough, but just a note that this is no longer a new engine. It has been in production since 2009. It has been in the F150 since 2011. It is used in vehicles ranging from pickups to police interceptor models. The second generation of this engine, due out in 2017, gets a power boost. In the GT, it is expected to deliver 600 hp from the same 3.5 litres (albeit at a higher rpm). The Raptor model gets more power in 2017 with the second generation 3.5 Ecoboost as well.

I have over 60K miles on my Ecoboost with at least half of that towing my 2007 27' FB Classic. It is still pulling strong and no problems other than typical issues when it was new. I am still very happy with it.

Eco Boost

I had one. Loved it, in fact my neighbor bought it. We towed a 25' AS, then went to a 30' AS and now on our second 30' AS. We did tow the 30' AS with the 2011 EcoBoost and she performed exceptionally well for a 1/2 Ton towing an 8,800 # trailer with scale weighed 1,000 # hitch weight. BUT, we were overloaded for the GVW of the truck so I sold it across the street and bought an F250 Diesel - flawless, but again offered a dollar amount for it I could not turn down, sold it and now have an F350 Diesel - again flawless.

In sum, IN MY OPINION, if towing 25' or less and also using as a daily driver the Ford F150 EcoBoost is a great option to consider. Turbos hold up well, I did and do on the Diesel engines let them idle for a minute or two to allow the turbos to cool off a bit.
