Excursions Rule...In my world, anyway...
I've been looking for a good deal on a 4WD Ford Excursion with the V10, 6.8L gas engine...Sure it only gets about 9 MPG while towing, but you might as well go in 'Style'....
Our 1999 F-350 with a Gas V8 gets about the same mileage with the Lance camper or while towing the AS.
We expect the Excursion to do a better job of towing...it's one 'solid' machine!
Found our Excurion today, and couldn't resist...so we added a nice cherry 2001 'Limited' to our TV stable, as it were...
It's white, bummer couldn't find a 'Silver' one, to pull our 28 ft Ambassador...but it will do just fine!
Can't wait to get it on the road for it's maiden voyage (for us) over to the Coast next week, about 100 miles away, where we'll be family camping at Half Moon Bay State Beach for 10 days...

Gunner...For Off Road Durability...
My early years were filled with more GM products than I care to recall....the last 25 or so years have seen mostly the 'Blue Oval' in various forms sitting in our driveway.
I guess I'm easier on vehicles these days, as I've much better luck with the Ford's living longer and more trouble-free. When it comes to the Heavy Duty side of their products, it's hard to beat Ford's Super Duty line of vehicles...IMHO
Georgezink...Our local refineries are taking orders for direct truck loads of fuel for we Excursion V10 owners...after they receive notice that our home's refinance loan has been approved....

I have a 2000 diesel Excursion with 160,000 miles. You couldn't ask for a better tow vehicle. Considering the number of miles on the vehicle, I have had few repairs.
In a recent 5000 mile trip from San Carlos Sonora to Miami and back to Colorado, I averaged almost 12 mpg towing my 25 foot Safari. Unloaded, my Excursion gets about 18 mpg.
Considering that gas is about 10% cheaper than diesel, a gas Excursion might be a good deal. The gas versions used to be considerably cheaper than the diesels but according to my friend the auto broker, diesel vehicles aren't selling at the auto auctions.
I have tried towing with a lighter vehicle, specifically a Ford Expedition with a 5.4 liter Triton. Mpg while towing was right at the 9 mpg mentioned for the gas Excursion. Towing in overdrive was impossible and the vehicle shifted into a lower gear at the slightest incline. Overall not a pleasant experience as the trailer pushed the little car around.

I also love my Excursion
I love my Excursion. I've even considered keeping it since it's such a versatile vehicle for our needs, and never gave me a problem. The only mechanical issue I had was an alternator going out on me on a lonely mountain road, with the nearest town 75 miles away, but she still got me home and never let me down.
I have the Ford Premium Care ESP warranty on mine that I paid ~2.5K for to cover me for everything till 100K miles or 2010 with a $100 deductible. Looking back on it today with 71K miles, I haven't got my money back yet from the warranty yet... That's a good thing I guess since she runs so well...
As I write this, I wish I wasn't selling her, but I can't keep 3 vehicles at the house... So I guess I will have to get rid of her. I haven't put an ad in yet, but my the Excursion are sought after since they stopped making them.
Enjoy your new tow vehicle. They are great multi purpose vehicles.

In my recent search for vehicles because I have to update, (the GMC is not up to par) one of the vehicles I have been considering is the Excursion, found a really nice low milage diesel one here recently and it is silver. The other I am looking at is a 1997 F250 Ext Cab LB with 7.3 that has low miles as well.
Only problem I have is getting rid of this GMC, it is a 2007 and I have only had it since Aug 31 2007, so payoff is a problem with fuel the way it is right now.

Hold them until they will no longer run. The are the new for real dinosaur that are extinct.
I love my 2004 Suburban 3/4 ton. It's a 6.0L and I get about 12mpg towing the 25' Safari about 62mph. Suburban was the first truck/wagon out there and now, again, is the ONLY one of it's kind out there. Rumors are running wild that the larger Expedition may also find it's way into the endangered species list as well, though I don't typically stay on top of Ford things all that closely, being a rabid GM customer.
Regardless of what side of the fence you are on (Ford/GM), the bottom line is that you won't be getting a Greenpeace membership card at the time of purchase.....maybe an honorary membership in to OPEC.

As a long time fan of the general, the excursion would be the only thing that might sway me. My ideal would be the ford chassis,chev body/trans,cummins engine. Well..... when I win the lottery......

i live about 70 miles from lancaster pa.tonight a group of my family members and friends did our annual trek to a pa dutch smorgasboard.the eight of us piled into my 2005 4x4 diesel x ltd.since we were all talking on the ride i set the cruise at 62 mph which is about 1800 rpms.my friend said what kind of gas mileage do you get with this boat?so i asked him what he thought,and of course he said 9 mpg.then ishowed him my ovhd computer which is accurate since i check it constantly.it showed 20.3 for the trip this evening.i cant beleive ford did not market this vehicle properly.i drive this vehicle every where i go,and i have made the stmt that with proper maintenance ill wear the interior out before the drivetrain ever goes.this vehicle is the most versitile vehicle i have ever owned.when i heard in 2005 that they were going to dicontinue this truck i went and ordered one before it was to late.i hope ford someday brings back this great family friendly vehicle.until then i will be driving mine every day and traveling with my airstream every chance i get.
