Duramax Oil

We have a 2017 Silverado with the 6.6L Duramax and it's time for our first DIY oil change. Dealerships have been doing our maintenance so far and used the GM Delvac 15W40 (P#88864038 quart size) which is a synthetic blend I believe. Our home is in Virginia so no worries about extreme cold temps and plan on staying with the 15W40 grade oil. So we are looking for any Duramax owners who would like to share what brand of oil they use Mobil, Shell, Amsoil, etc.. Also the type conventional, synthetic blend or full synthetic. Any Diesel mechanics who want to chime in would be excellent. Thank You in advance!

I use a Rotella T6 full synthetic, but if you want to stick with 15W you will need to go with T5 blend. I use a Mobil filter.

Go with Shell Rotella T6; you'll be happy. When I've exhausted the "free" oil changes that come with a new truck purchase, that's exactly what I will go back to using.

Are you claiming Shell doesn't make T6 in 15W40 grade? I see it everywhere. Here is an example. (Full disclosure: you get the most benefit when switching to 5W40, so that's what I run.)

I use Rotella T6 5W40 full synthetic, and Rotella oil filters. Have used this oil in the last 3 Duramax trucks I have owned with 0 problems. I run 10,000 KM or 6500 miles between changes. I also have a FASS fuel system installed and change all fuel filters every third oil change. I also use fuel conditioner at every fill. Stanadyne is a great fuel additve to give extra lubrication to the diesel injetor pump.

Whatever premium, non-synthetic diesel oil WalMart has on sale plus Napa Gold filters (oil and fuel) from fleetfilter.com Oil change every 5k, fuel filter change every other. ‘06 Duramax, 180k miles, and all good so far. Also have been using Diesel Kleen fuel additive for the last 120k or so.

Rotella seems to have a good reputation here and otherwise. I use Valvoline in all my gasoline vehicles with NAPA Gold filters. Not a minutes problem and we reached 330k miles on our Tahoe before giving it to our daughter who is still running it. The only other diesel motor we had was a Mercedes which used Mobil in but we didn't keep that long. I assume a full synthetic would be the best but don't want to over do it if not necessary. In any case DIY will save $$ no matter what, decisions, decisions.

If you go by the physical properties of the oil, Amsoil consistently comes in the top couple. It also consistently holds the important properties as it ages. Full disclosure, I work for Shell Oil and our Rotella product is very good, but if you go by the numbers there are several better oils, including some at a competitive price.

That everyone report goods experience with the oils they use speaks volumes to the standards and the general forgiving nature of engines and oil.

I appreciate your input being an oil man who knows the specs. I have looked at Amsoil and like the product but it's about twice the price. Also I have someone else change it if we are traveling so availability might be an issue.
