They lament the poor performance of the exhaust brake on the downhill section - even in tow/haul mode. I suspect you could obtain better performance of the exhaust brake by manually downshifting the transmission.

Here's the YouTube video of the test:

I’ve seen this video before and their experience is completely different from mine. I own a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 3.0L. On mine, in tow haul mode, the exhaust break and grade shifting work very well.

I don’t own the 3.0 Duramax but that article seemed off to me. With an aftermarket tune my 3.0 diesel will hold to a 6 percent grade up to 6,000 pounds without using the TBC or the truck brakes.

With a proper sized WDH and axle to frame air bags a half ton should be able to handle up to 1,150 pounds of tongue weight for this example nothing in the bed according to the Mfgrs and by SAE j2907. In practice I have found this to be true assuming you used your WDH and loading to adjust your axles & tongue weight to optimum or at least within maximum spec. If you fail to adjust it to get the weight back on the steer axle lol all bets are off.

Chevy 1500 Inline six diesel. Do you have one?

I have the Chevy Silverado with the 3.0 diesel and it pulls my 26 FC with ease while getting 16 mpg from Raleigh NC to the SC coast. It is a great combination. Love it!

I have the duramax and absolutely love it. It gets great fuel mileage, has plenty of torque to tow our 25 FBT and so far (knock on wood), I haven't had any problems with it.

I tend to get 16 MPG or so towing our 25 FBT up and down the hills.

3.0L I-6 LM2 (First Generation) Duramax Turbo Diesel/2020 Denali

Gathered some data after my recent trip from the Seattle Area to the Rock Springs, WY. 2023 Airstream International Rally. This was my first trip out of State and traveled a little over 2020 miles with around 20 of that local, "Maxine" back at the site with over a couple of thousand other "Streams".
I attempted to keep it to arond 63 MPH, however, with Truck speeds @70, and Cars @80 in sections, I pushed a bit faster in some areas. There also were the construction zones which we all love creeping along in for miles on end. Towing mileage was just short of 14, and there were hills to pull, and headwinds ( going home) to buck. My oil was changed prior to departure, and it barely used any, so the extra Quart was dead weight. Best 25 mile loop in this Denali is 32.8 according to the on board computer. I checked out the cargo capacity of a 2023 Denali and it is roughly 150 lbs less than my 2020, due I suspect to the self driving components, and more steel in the engine. My rear axle was maxed so a new one would not work for me. To my amazement Diesel was cheaper that both alternatives at a local Station. My towing experience has been outstanding in this 1500, with plenty of torque to charge off of those on ramps. I just do not like driving the bigger trucks, so for now I am completely satisfied. My Carbon Pro bed does help a bit with weight, however, the Red Brambo Brakes add it back on. ....J
