Chevy 1500 Inline six diesel. Do you have one?

Looking for feed back from anyone with the new Chevy 1500 Silverado diesel.

If you have one. What are your thoughts?

Seems no one has one yet.

Would someone mind going out and buy one so we (me) could get an honest opinion?

Here's a link to the article and video of the Ike Gauntlet Challenge performed by The Fast Lane Truck:

https://www.tfltruck.com/2019/11/202...re-ever-video/

They lament the poor performance of the exhaust brake on the downhill section - even in tow/haul mode. I suspect you could obtain better performance of the exhaust brake by manually downshifting the transmission.

Here's the YouTube video of the test:

2020 GMC 1500 Sierra Denali Carbon Pro Durmax

My truck only has a bit over 1K miles on it due to COVID restrictions, and preparations for the arrival of "Maxine", (pressure wash/seal concrete, install GE RV panel 50/30/110, order gear before they are sold out due to supply issues) study systems, and gear up. The engine is turbine smooth, gets great mileage (better than my supercharged luxury car) and is a pleasure to drive. All of the safety features, options, and luxury made by custom build all worth it. They are a limited production and you may have to wait for yours, I was lucky, ordering it as soon as all of my specifications were available. My Sherline scale showed 740 lbs. with full fresh water, empty black tank, and the grey showing around 12%. The Carbon Pro box saved 62 lbs. from cargo capacity. Depending on your requirements, it could be a great fit. I have only 1K miles on it as of this writing, plan an oil change soon prior to my first trip tow. The computer displayed 15 MPG following my trip home from the AS lot with my 2019 International RB Certified Pre Owned ( unable to tell from new ) trailer. This trip included the obligatory hitching routine, warm up, Friday rush hour traffic, and a trip home avoiding big hills as the engine had only 550 miles on it, and a parking adventure backing into the spot where my Father kept his '56 18' AS for years. I expect better mileage when finally hitting the road. A trip to the scales, and installation of the GM tires sensors for my AS tires, completes my extensive preparations. This is not my father's AS. I had no idea when I purchased it what wonderful technology is beneath the skin of my AS. The only issue that I have encountered so far is finding a fix for attaching a Canopy on my Carbon Fiber bed. (Get with it GM - this has been out for long enough that you should have a kit fix by now!! )
I will be posting an update about my experiences when I obtain some data.
Cheers, .....

Literally made me LOL

I have the 2020 Silverado LT with 3.0L Duramax and absolutely love this vehicle. It is powerful and the transmission super smooth. Excellent gas mileage unloaded on the highway (I exceed 30mpg if I keep it around 60-65mph and still get 27mpg going 70). I have not towed yet with it but that will be soon enough and can report back how it handles.

ETA - I'm a little over 9000 miles into it

Ok I have more to report back with about towing with the 3.0L. Full disclosure this is my first diesel and first real towing experience.

Truck handles very well pulling the trailer. Truck was full with the wife, 2 large dogs, coolers and such. 23’ trailer weighing about 5750 lbs, and an Equalizer weight distributing hitch. Zero sway, very rare push from heavy winds or semi passing. I felt in control the entire time.

Trek ended up being 1,095 miles from Houston, Tx through Ft Worth through Amarillo through Taos, just into southern part of Colorado. We stopped quite a bit for bathroom breaks and I always filled up to be safe. Low mileage point was 11.5mpg over 168 mile stretch. The high was 16.5mpg over 208 miles. In total I filled up with 79.2 gallons of fuel ($176.28) and had to fill up with 4 gallons of DEF ($12.27). Total combined average MPG came out to 13.8. Speed wise we were cruising mostly in the 70’s. Obviously slowed down plenty in the mountainous regions. Interestingly we hit our high mpg at the later stage driving through NM/Taos into Colorado.

Was hoping my overall MPG was higher for the trip but I really shouldn’t complain because we were driving pretty quick. My biggest surprise was the amount of DEF the truck sucked up. I left with almost a full tank, 1 bar shy. And it was sucked down to the red warning light and I filled it up with 4 gal.

Hi, can someone please explain to me how a Diesel gets excellent GAS mileage?

Well, in a simple nutshell.....more btus of energy per gallon of fuel. It's a lot more mechanically complicated than that, but that's the start.
And a very slow combustion rate...translates into high torque.

Thanks for the feedback, hopefully the OP is checking back on this thread and will appreciate the comments too.

I'd like to know if the fuel consumption numbers are from the on-board computer or based on hand calculations you performed by dividing the number of miles driven by the number of gallons put into the tank. It may sound like a silly question but I've found our 2018 GMC Sierra (gasoline) consistently reports computer generated fuel figures that are approximately 10% higher than the old-fashioned numbers I calculate. The inconsistency is a common issue noted on a variety of geeky online forums.

Touché... Old habits die hard! Need to change my vocabulary to “fuel” mileage for now on.

I want to be careful and say this is far from a perfect truck. I’m not a fan of the stock rancho shocks for Z71, I hear Trailboss ranchos are better. I plan on upgrading the shocks at some point. Will be interesting to see the DEF consumption over time.

Good news is I’ve been consistently seeing better hand calculated figures than the DIC figures for FUEL mileage

1) 262.9 miles 13.5mpg per DIC (19.128 gal for 13.74mpg)
2) 186.7 miles 13.9mpg per DIC (12.535 gal for 14.89mpg)
3) 172.3 miles 12.9mpg per DIC (12.557 gal for 13.72mpg)
4) 96.5 miles 12.2mpg per DIC (7.759 gal for 12.44mpg)
5) 168.1 miles 11.3mpg per DIC (14.596 gal for 11.51mpg)
6) 208.4 miles 15.1mpg per DIC (12.653 gal for 16.47mpg)

Our campsite is 13.0 miles after last full up, DIC indicates 14.3mpg

Thank you for the update.

I am wondering if your fuel mileage will increase as you add on some miles and break the engine in.

Sounds like it handled very well and I don't think your mileage was bad at all considering the speed.

Obviously, I can’t speak for the accuracy of the 1500 but my new 2500 with the Duramax is consistently reporting lower fuel mileage than my hand calculated results indicate. It is always a nice surprise!
By the way, in the first 2000 miles I’ve been averaging in the 19 mpg range with 99% in town driving.
Pretty amazing mileage!

Good bit 65, mostly 70-75 range. My wife likes to push it even higher but I tell her to slow down. Lol. I believe measurements 3,4,5 probably coincide with the higher speeds in mid-high 70’s and are likely increasing in elevation. The last measurement is going much slower in this low-mid 60’s approaching Taos then past.

ETA- you can kind of track elevation too going from Houston (0-100ft) to Amarillo (3600), Taos (7000) Southern Colorado (7900)
