Cargo glide with Topper

Greetings and thank you for those who posted regarding what I should purchase prior to taking possession of my 28' twin.

Our plan is to mate our ordered TV, a Ford F-350 (6 3/4 box) with a cargo glide and cab level topper.

Has anyone had experience with cargo glide? Or what type of clearance or distance can I anticipate from the truck bed (with or without the cargo glide) to the top of topper gate?

We are hoping to slide bikes into the truck by removing the front wheel using a fork mount without having to change seat height.

I would appreciate anyone's insight into using this combination.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
We added a topper and a cargo glide to our F350. I forgot the brand but our has a 2200 lb capacity and takes up 7 or 8” of height. I like the unit but think I might have overdone it on capacity. I have to remove the seats from our bikes for them to fit. Perhaps a smaller (1000 lb) cargo glide would be lower profile. I wish I had researched a little more.

Other than that the cargo glide makes it much easier to access stuff. Another variable is the degree to which the slide can extend out. Ours will extend completely up to the end of the bed.

Literally just had one installed this weekend. A couple years ago I went from a hard tonneau cover to a Lear topper. I LOVED the tonneau but wanted more space to carry stuff. With the tonneau, you could put stuff in locations accessible from the sides when necessary. But with the topper - you have to climb all the way in for stuff in the back. We use a long steel fire poker to get some stuff but you’re not pulling a generator out with that.

So just had a 1000# bed slider installed. Opens 100% (some go to 70%) and has legs I can deploy if needed. Looks like it’s going to be a breeze to load and unload going forward!

CargoGlide should have dimensions and specifications for their product on their web site. Do some research now, even if it means contacting tech support, to make sure you buy the product most suitable to your needs.

I have used both BedSlide and ExtendoBed products and will say most sales staff overestimate the weight of your stuff and oversell the capacity needed. A salesman for a similar product absolutely insisted I needed a 1000 LB. capacity and would not sell me anything less. I went to the CAT Scales and showed him pictures of the items and the scale tickets. He would not back down. In the end I purchased a used BedSlide on Craigslist and I'm very happy.

I'll look for pictures of our BedSlide installation and post them tomorrow.

On edit, I found a few pictures. I know you'll have a cab level topper but thought you might like the idea of the "troughs" I constructed for the wheel wells. There are retailers who sell similar products to make use the space inside the bed and over the wheel well but my home-made system worked better for our needs. All that stuff, including two 40 LB tool boxes, only weighs 500 LB. Don't buy more capacity than you think you'll need.

Have you considered a DECKED drawer system? I have one and love it. Gives you weather proof storage but you still have a bed.

I have since installed an ARE cap with side windows that open so you can get at anything on the raised bed.

We have a BedSlide for our GMC Canyon and it is great. So nice to be able to pull it out to easily access items. Our bikes would fit, but with so much other stuff back there not when camping. I put the heavier items like the Honda generator(s) up front for better TV weight distribution. Only complaints would be that the release latch requires you use finger tips only so you don't get your knuckles pinched by the tailgate and that the surface is not as durable as the truck bed (Rhino-Lined). if you are concerned about vertical space maybe look at the taller caps even though they do not look as nice.

Cargo Glide 1500XL

We have this Cargo Glide under an ARE Z topper on a 2020 F-350 long bed. Love the entire combination. I won’t have an exact measurement until later this week when I visit the rig again. However, the height from the Cargo Glide deck to the top of the topper opening is approx. 34 inches. Will get you an exact measurement likely on Thurs.

I have a Joey Bed slide in my Tahoe 2 door and in my SSR . I also had one in my Avalanche . Greatest thing since ...

I was going to put the one from the Avalanche in my Tundra but never got a round TUIT .

I have an AAR high cap with Windoors on the sides and a drop down front window to make cleaning the rear cab window possible .

The beauty of the Joey Bed is that it is only 1 1/4" above the truck bed floor. Unfortunately the company was bought by a motor home manufacture and they dropped the pick up bed slide line.

I've found that the other bed slide companies slides are 4 or more inches off truck bed floor . This means you will need a higher bed cap to get the same clearance as if equipped with a Joey Bed slide.

I have found the Windoors and step make access easy as I have bins, 2 bikes and EZ up, chairs, carpet, fire pit, BBQ and other stuff in the bed.

My Tundra just clears the 8' garage door.

Cargo Glide CG1500XL Measurements

I had a chance to grab some measurements. I have a 2020 F-350 with a standard height ARE Z series topper and a CargoGlide CG1500XL. The height from the deck of the CargoGlide to the underside of the topper opening is 32 inches for most of the opening but only 31 inches at the hinges.

Hey gang, thanks for posting. Clearance is a big deal with bikes. Some of our have carbon seat posts which require torque specifications, therefore moving them is a hassle.

Does it make sense to install the truck bed slide first and then chose a topper that is either standard or elevated?

The topper manufacturers make many different models of toppers. Last year when we were looking at ARE and Leer tops I was surprised how many different models and variations within models were offered. The rear hatches were dramatically different from brand to brand and model to model. If I read your OP correctly you didn't refer to a model nor brand of topper - only that it would be cab level. I suggest you not trust any dimension somebody provides on this thread unless they have the exact truck and exact top you plan to purchase. Perhaps the local sales staff of the topper brand you want to purchase can hook you up with somebody who has that same installation. Otherwise the variation in the openings, how it fits on the truck, etc. may lead you down the wrong path.

Regarding your bicycle seat posts... I know of bicyclists who have the same issue - they bring a pre-set torque wrench with them to adjust the seat post.

I'd love a bed slide.
BUT, I have a Honda EU3000is and with a slide it wouldn't clear the tonneau. I could switch to a topper, but the Tundra is limited in cargo capacity, so adding a slide and a topper eats up all the available weight.
The OP has a 3500 so he can put a locomotive on the slide and still have cargo capacity left over.
My Tundra is also my daily driver, so there's no one ton truck in my future.
Instead of a slide I have Action Packers and a boat hook. Hook and pull.
It's all about choices and compromises.

Curious if anyone has considered building the 80/20 Inc slider (plans available at: 80/20.net ). Looks interesting at a little over $600.00.

I am also interested in an answer to this. How you build it or attach it to the truck bed is totally unclear. I am a bit concerned that it says it is not designed to stand on it and there is no stated capacity, just a disclaimer.

I have have a cargo glide in my 2018 Silverado. The glide deck is 6 1/2 inches above the truck bed floor. I have 30 1/2 inches between the glide and the lift gate hinge and 33 1/2 inches in the interior. Instead of troughs over the wheel wells, I opted to put tool boxes in place of the windows on my ARE topper. This I very handy to just open a door instead of reaching over the tailgate on the sides.

Unless I’m missing something that design fits almost at the height of the top of the sides of the truck bed creating a truck “bed” at the bottom of the topper. I’d love to see a 80/20 design that is a bed floor slide. Anyone?
