Bigger Tow Vehicle?

I caught up to a tri axle Airstream on a major highway today.Maybe a 34 footer? When I passed it, it was being pulled by a Toyota Camary!

Was there a 5.7 L. engine where the back seat used to be?

CanAm RV is well known for setting up some...shall we say...interesting towing combinations. Things like K cars and the like.

Before we get into things like Canadian gravity and other weak jokes, something I usually can't resist, I wish I could understand how CanAm RV does it and whether there's been any objective testing of how they do it.

Gene...there are a number of CanAM posts regarding Andy's towing history and philosophy. W/O drawing all the flamers that assume you must have a diesel dually to tow anything ...CanAM has a long history of putting together thoughtful and careful tow set-ups. They also have done "testing" which I am sure excedes that of most/all? others. If I remember correctly they have been in this business for a long time.

They generally use Hensley and also make sure approprite wheels and tires on the tow vehicle...to avoid lateral "flex" caused by high profile tires...particularly on the favorite big pick up trucks. Often do some modification of the tow vehicle hitch.

All-in-all...I find Andy's and CanAm MANY years of experience with particular intellectual curiosity on tow vehicles and set-up quite interesting. I subscribe to a Canadian "RV" magazine that Andy does a monthly column on tow vehicles...with frequent comparitive tests and results published...

Again...I do not blindly assume ALL that Andy or CanAm says is gospel...but I do find it much more studied and authoritative than the "bigger TV MUST be better" crowd.

You may want to Google CanAm and look at their current tow vehicle ste-ups...they usually have a couple of current examples on their web site.

BTW...they do have many very supportive customers...including some on this forum...Tom R in Two Harbors

P.S. I spoke to Andy once about my Land Cruiser as a TV...he said three things would help...1) go to a lower profile tire (with correct, adequate weight rating) 2) better shocks...likely Bilstein. and 3) likely some hitch work to reinforce the stock hitch. Maybe a transmission cooler. We did not talk exactly what AS it could tow...TMR
