So, to the OP - there are lots of great choices in tow vehicles, evidenced by the many responses you have seen here and in other threads.
And the great thing is that everyone who has posted is happy with their own rigs! How neat is that.
Welcome, good hunting, and we'll see you on the road.
Pat

I remember this discussion on Ford, Chevrolet and Mopar from the sixth grade in 1954. Thought we settled it back then!

We have the exact same AS as you, '06 28' CCD, and did the same TV analysis. The difference is location, we're in the Pacific Northwest versus you in Florida. I mention this because, we tow and camp regularly in mountains (Cascades, Rockies, Sierra Nevada's, etc.). Because of this, getting a TV "bigger than the job" was important. Nothing worse than driving down a mountain pass in inclement weather and have the tail wag the dog.
I personally like 650 ft/lbs of torque pulling power, integrated exhaust brake for drama-free down hills, and 7500 lb.+ of a modern diesel truck. I think you can get this in any 3/4 ton diesel truck, but we chose the Dodge Ram specifically for the Cummins Turbo-diesel with integrated exhaust brake.
Cheers and happy towing

Hi Serena,
Was it you that ran into us at the Adult toy storage today? I wanted to say thanks for letting us see your Airstream. I hope we see you again out there sometime. Keep in touch! Robin and Robert Harbuck

Also, Suburbans and Excursions give up so much towing capacity that you would always be concerned about being over your safe towing weight. Only if I traveled with more than four people and a dog would I consider an SUV over a 3/4-ton truck, gas or diesel. But for four people and a dog, or less, why give up the towing power? Luxury in a truck can equal anything the SUVs offer, as well.

I'm not going to get into a gearhead p**** contest, but I started with a 2500 Suburban and switched to a 2500 Diesel Silverado long bed quad cab.
If I had my life to live over.... I sometimes wish I'd stuck with the Suburban. That is probably dictated by two facts: - Truck bed height - I'm vertically challenged and getting up into the bed of my truck is a PAIN - I carry a ladder to get up and down.
- Storage inside. Sorry I disagree about everything except gas & propane storage. Truck bed covers are easy to break into. A Suburban with an alarm system - a little tougher. I fulltime and now carry a Honda 3000 Handi. I just get sick thinking about getting that or my tools getting stolen... not a trivial amount.
The diesel truck does get MUCH better mileage than the older Suburbans though, and the six speed tranny is VERY smooth.
Now my name is Paula FORD, and I still like chevy's better... however I LOVE the tow mirrors on the Dodges, and I LOVE the integrated ladder on the Fords.
It really irks me how much after purchase dollars you have to throw into a pickup - bed liner or coating, truck topper or boxes of some kind, ladder to get up into a big ass 2500 or 3500, running boards for the same purpose, even electric tow mirrors were an extra for mine. The Burb I had basically had all that stuff on it... Oh yeah, but the OEM Hitch.
There isn't a perfect world, get something used but halfway decent and go camping!
Paula

Back then I would have been a Studabaker fan, no doubt.

I'll keep my 2011 6.7 oil burner & new tranny designed & now built by the blue oval guys over that Isuzu Duramax...
Btw - just poking the tiger in the cage - my father is on his second Allison/Duramax Chevy and was over at the house giving me a hard time today over my Ford...

I have been towing my 34 ft Airstream, first with 1995 F-350 crew cab dually, with 7.3 diesel, then with 2006 F-250 Super Duty FX4 with 6.0 diesel. I will pick up, from dealer, a new 2011 F-250 crew cab Lariat FX4 with Ford built 6.7 diesel with 400 horsepower tomorrow. It ought to snatch that 34 footer on down the road.

I would have prefered a pickup over my V10 Excursion but real pickups don't exist here unless you special order them. By real I mean an 8ft bed. I would want a Crew Cab Long bed and they are rare as hens teeth around here because most folks drive them for the redneck factor here in Alabama. I paid $7000 for my Excursion and a truck of similar quality would have been two or three times that. Many of the trucks around here are short bed crew cab and they are used like cars. It was not worth $40k to get exactly what I want and since I don't have $40k it is a moot point. If you can't pay cash you don't really need it. I will have my house paid off in a few years and I need that more than a new truck.
