Last time I checked most all of these things depreciate once you leave the lot. Even the AS drops in value. Just get something that you can keep for a very Long time and doesn't cost a lot to keep rolling. Best of luck with your new money pit.

Hi, big three? What a joke. Shouldn't it be Chevrolet, Dodge, [Ram] and Ford? maybe it should have been Chevrolet/GMC, Ford/Mercury, [they used to make Mercury trucks in Canada] And Dodge/Plymouth? Slap GMC on a Chevrolet truck and all of a sudden it's a different animal. In their tests they concluded that the Ford was slightly slower in the drag races because it weighed more, [about 500 lbs] but the public wasn't buying these for drag racing. Also they stated the the two GM products had dash boards that were about a decade old. Since the day that the Chevy small block replaced the Ford Flathead, all these magazine tests have been in favor of GM, but the buying public has placed their vote in puchase numbers.

All kidding aside (and I love all you guys) - you can be sure I will be checking out the Fords and Dodges when it gets time to retire my 2004 Duramax. I do hope it won't be anytime soon, as the price will be steep whatever I do.
I hope the next one will be as perfect as the present one is.
Can't resist: those of you who sing German diesels' praises should go to school on Lewster's experience with his Sprinter.

i found out years ago if you get that truck paid for ,run the wheels off it. trying to keeping up with the new stuff every year or two will keep you in the poor house.
first year or two that new truck is out of date power and extras. spend that money on your family and grandkids, have fun camping, enjoy life.

I still want a VW TDI! I had a 2002 Jetta TDI wagon with over 160,000 miles on it and sold it for $2000 over book. I never had a problem and I miss that car but wanted an SUV. The new VW Tuareg looks great but my 04 Acura MDX won't die! So keeping her for awhile. I like to have $$ in the bank just in case.

Did someone mention my name? I thought that my ears were burning!
The 'schooling' that Pat refers to is this (with a new chapter as well):
After using my '04 Sprinter 2500 as my service van and as the TV for my '06 19CCD, I had several major problems.
First was the harmonic balancer that went out for the second time and took the keyway on the front of the crank with it at 105,000 miles. Luckily it was a MOPAR replacement part that failed and Dodge took care of the replacement of the entire bottom end of the engine.
Second was the triple whammy I had while returning to FL from Summer in Oregon via the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. Went thru a turbo, alternator and transmission in 5 DAYS in Oct. '08. That little fiasco cost me $10,000!!!!
I then bought a new '08 Dodge Ram 2500 with The CTD and 6 speed MANUAL tranny as the new TV. No problems there as the Ram 2500 is a towing BEAST! It was just too small and difficult to work out of a pick up when you are used to a Sprinter, which was to be a service van only now.
The LAST STRAW happened about 7 weeks ago. As I'm driving in Naples, minding my own business, I notice a lot of white smoke coming from somewhere and wonder who is having an engine melt-down. TURNS OUT TO BE ME!!!!!! I pull right over and open the hood and find the engine smoking and totally covered with oil. Maybe it's the turbo again??? Catastrophic failure??????
Mercedes is now selling and servicing the Sprinters (as they should!) so I have it taken there and await the diagnosis. Hole in the #2 piston causing massive blow-by and spraying oil out of the dipstick. Engine is a gonner as they can not remove 4 of 5 injectors...frozen solid into the top of the block!
And the worst news..no re-builts or even good used engines available and a new one is $14,000 installed from Mercedes. What to do....what to do?
BUY A NEW SPRINTER...of course! No, I haven't lost my mind and I really didn't want or need a car payment as the Sprinter was paid for, but the new version of the van is a better (3.0L 6 cylinder diesel used across the entire Mercedes vehicle range), bigger, more powerful, smoother and much more refined. It WILL NOT be used for towing on cross country jaunts and will be my new service vehicle from now until the warranty runs out. Then a new one again!
Lesson learned......... don't keep a vehicle past the original power train warranty (or purchased manufacturer's extended warranty) if you expect to have any funds in the bank after the warranty period expires and you depend on said vehicle for your livelihood.

I will admit my bias for Ford products. Currently I have a '28 Model A Tudor, '68 Mustang GT Convert, and the '09 F150 5.4 TV. I am not quite sure how that came to be. It just sort of happened.
