Audi Allroad

Has anyone else towed a lightweight AS with an Audi Allroad?
My new baby vintage Caravel is well below my towing capacity for the allroad, but I haven't actually hitched the two up yet - anybody towing with an allroad currently?

thanks, I"m a newbie.

hi pcasa and welcome to the forums...

a quick search suggests...

NO ONE has posted regarding the allroad...

cool!

i'll assume you have the 2.7l v6 turbo not the 4.2v8.

the towing capacity is around 3300lbs on the u.s.a. models...

and like most t.c. is based on an essentially EMPTY allroad...

in other words, passengers and gear REDUCE the towing capacity pound4pound...

so a small boat or pop up would be my limit.

yes a caravel is within that weight range and you might do fine...

my concerns would be frontal area/drag/wind resistance and brakes...

i'd want really really good brakes on the trailer.

the factory/oem receiver for the allroad is a ONE INCH box....

thats small...

do you already have the allroad receiver? and wiring harness?

i ask this because my understanding is audi stopped importing the usa/dot certified receiver 2 years ago.

the euro model receiver is a bit beefier but isn't DOT certified.

euro allroads are rated to about 5000lbs but d'rules is different over there...

i don't think an aftermarket receiver is available that is dot certified...

so unless you've already acquired a receiver this might all be irrelevant...

or you will be the first to post towing feedback on this combo here...

cool!

cheers

Yes, I have done a ton of homework on the whole hitch thing.

I'm either going to get the Bosal hitch from Euro Hitch or preferably, I am getting the European Audi factory hitch - my preference. Each should be capable of the towing capacity of 3300 lbs. I will have to keep the Caravel very "empty" to keep my weight under 80% of capacity. And, then I'll just have to give her a try. Maybe I am blazing a new trail here - wish me luck.

Good luck with it. Be sure the factory hitch setup is capable of handling the North American tongue weight, IIRC across the pond the tongue weight is very low, like 5%or less of trailer weight. Figure on needing to carry 450 pounds on the ball. Yes, it will be less than that, but your Airstream has a tongue weight of around 15% of trailer weight.

Wow! Here I read this thread 4 years later and have the same basic questions. Did you ever go for it?

I am new this forum. I rented a 25' motor home this summer and have caught the camping bug. I am looking at a Bambi 16 and was trying to rationalize using my 2004 2.7L Audi allroad with automatic tranny. The max GVW rating of the hitch is 3300lbs and 300lb tongue weight. The Bambi 16 is right at the hairy edge of that limit without figuring in too much cargo. Actually, the toungue weight is more than 300lbs, so I am already trying to defy the laws of physics.

I have USA factory hitch and wiring, and have rented U-Hauls and dump trailers a bunch or times. The allroad has behaved quite well. But I don't have a trailer brake controller. Is that a must-have? Or do the AS have their own surge brake setups? I will have to search around here for how to add a controller.

Welcome! The first easy answer is "yes" ... you need a brake controller. RV trailers (most) are unlike boats or uhauls, they don't use surge brakes, they use electrically controlled brakes activated by the controller.

I assume you're thinking a vintage Bambi? It would be a good match I'm sure behind the Audi... it's a lot more aerodynamic vs the uhaul trailer!
Send pics of your setup when you get it!
