How does the Atlas perform when towing a vehicle?

Atlas towing

Iím also anxious to know. Have had my Atlas for a month and just got it set up with tow bar to use with Jeep Cherokee. Have only towed it from Camping World to storage (40 miles) and it seemed fine. Total of both vehicles is right at the 15,250 that Airstream says is max. I knew it was back there but it was very stable and seemed fine. I was up to 65 for a few miles but didnít want to go faster.

Atlas towing

For that small 3.0L v6 diesel that seems like a stretch (Iíve been looking at sprinters recently for a camper van build). Maybe fine on flat lands but donít try and tow up any mountain passes in the Rockies.....

The sprinter engine only has 188hp. Even with its 345lb of torque you are totally maxing out that little diesel moving a 15,000lb train down the road with wind resistance.

They run hot as it is from what I understand......

My last combo was about ~13,000 lbs and I had 400hp and 400ft-lbs of torque and it worked hard.

Your rig, your money, but I would not recommend hauling anything bigger than maybe a bike rack behind an Atlas. It's already an oversized Sprinter, after all.

No Problem Towing

Since my last post (right after getting set to tow a Jeep Cherokee with my Atlas) I've logged over 5,000 miles towing. Went through the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, the Poconos, and through New England. Never a problem at all. I watch the total weight (stay below 15K pounds), and have been very happy with performance and gas mileage. On the steepest grades I've used paddle shifters to make sure I'm in 4th or 5th gear. I can't say "I don't even know it's back there", but I can say no problem if you stay within the weight limit recommendations of Airstream.

Good to know, happy to be wrong on this. I'll keep that in mind if we ever move from our Interstate to something bigger on the same platform.
