21-23 f150 max tow recall

I have a 22í f150 max tow max payload. Ford put out a recall for a nut at the end of the Axel. Mine failed on the way home on my last trip. The truck has 28k on it and Iím running way under payload and Axel limit weights.

This is my passenger rear tire. Check the nut on the end of the Axel when you rotate your tires. This is on the 9.75Ē rear.

I hope you werenít towing when it happened.
What did you notice/hear when it failed? By that Iím asking what I might experience.
We got the recall notice but according to it, no remedy to the problem yet.
Iím really nervous that there will be no fix anytime soon and what that means to our camping season.
Of course if we canít drive the truck at all thatís a problem anyway.

Follow the link below for a ton of information on the service bulletin: TSB 22B34

We found the problem when we were on a trip. Saw some differential oil on the ground and the inside of the rear tire was completely wet. Went to the closest Ford dealer and they were unaware of the TSB but did step up and take care of us. The keeper bolts on both sides had failed. The Ford forum shows some have had the axles repaired multiple times. Not good but it will not deter us from a trip to Alaska this summer.

I was towing. Thatís about the only thing I use the truck for. Cruise controls was on and I felt the engine slightly shutter and the Speedo read exactly half of my speed. Then the speedo jumped back up to current correct speed and a wall of yellow warning lights came on. Traction controle, emergency auto brake, cross traffic, anti skid, ABS, and reverse auto braking. No kidding the lights stayed on until I got to the dealer and they started it. Iím not sure if Iím hearing some bearing noise or itís just the tires. Now Iím probably overthinking that noise and hearing isnít what it once was but even I couldnít miss all those lights. It ran fine and I thought it was a computer problem until I saw the fluid.

I'm sorry, but this seems priceless. Did you really take a picture of your display cluster while driving?

Not sure what's worse, an axle that locks up or taking a picture of your display cluster while going 62mph.

Thatís a bit scary. How did it tow after it happened?
Iíve read that there is still no remedy from Ford for this.
Weíve got a trip planned 3 hours away from home in May.

I couldnít tell any difference. I thought I had a computer problem because of all the caution lights. I was on the highway so it wasnít quiet but even slow I didnít notice anything. The hub must have shifted some because it got into the seal causing the leak. I drove about 70 miles home after.

Ford had my truck for a week and replaced both axels. The problem is the design. I think this isnít the end of the story. As far as I know the replacement Axel is the same part as the one that failed.

If you are worried before your trip pull the rear tires off and look at the Axel nut. Itís easy to see.

Iím at 28,000 mi now mostly towing too. I did the cat scale and itís way under weight limits. I like the truck but this is going to be trouble I think.

Ironically the "max tow" package actually reduces payload capacity, which can be an issue on some F-150 configs like a loaded Powerboost.

These F-150s have a max payload package in addition to the max tow package. They have payload ratings similar to 3/4 ton trucks.

The F150's with the HDPP package are rare and limited to only certain engines and trim levels (XL and basic XLT). I believe Ford also stopped offering the HDPP in the 2023 and newer models.

I was merely pointing out that the OP has a max payload package, so payload limitations are not a factor in this recall.

The recall concerns max trailer/payload vehicles, of which there are over 113000 affected examples. So not very rare either.

Similar ... but still not an F250 in other specs / areas ... get what you feel safe with and fits your budget.

Following up with other info for the curious. Our 2021 F150 XLT is the Max Tow HDPP, the listed payload is 2421 lbs. Our axles were both replaced in May 2023 at 33,000 miles while we were on a trip and currently have 50,000 miles on the odometer. I carry replacement bolts and an Easy Out set just in case we can't get to a dealer. Don't know it that will really help but so far no repeat failures and waiting for Ford to have the final "remedy" - whatever that is.

I just did a 1000 mile trip this past weekend. My first trip since the Axel repair. When I got home I rotated my tires and found lots of dirt and dust stuck to the hub on the back side of the brake dust shield. I think the seal has a slow leak. I cleaned it off and will check it again after a few hundred miles to be sure. The bolt is still on the Axel so it didn’t fail again.
