2024 ram trailer camera option

This option comes with coax cable to run from back of AS to the back of the truck. Due to its narrow field of view they state it should only be up to 6’ from ground. Has anyone dealt with this option and where did you attach camera and where to run the cable. Thanks for any tips.

Why not use a Wi-Fi camera and in truck separate screen? After market options have cameras that do this with no coax cable needed.

That way the truck's electronics don't get compromised. Power comes from trailer lights. New ASs are set up this way as are many other RVs.

Yes I do have that wireless camera option. Used it for years now. The new Ram camera quality is so much better and really like that the camera is integrated into the rear view mirror along with the side cameras. Much better visibility Just preference I guess.

I made a little bracket and attached it to the top of my license plate holder. This allowed running the coax cable under the trailer, zip tied to the gas line, and is minimally visible as it comes up near the bumper storage and connects to the camera.

It works well, quality is great, but it’s not as wide angle as the Voyager I originally had.

One annoyance is when the truck is put in reverse, the camera pans down. With the camera that low, I’m looking at the ground. But I think the fix is panning the camera down in the mirror so there is no “room” for it to pan down in reverse.

Install question

Thanks for the idea. Yes I turn off the mirror backup move when I am towing.
You wouldn't happen to have a picture of the camera above the license plate? Where did you stash all the extra cable and where did you install the repeater? I assume around the hitch area.

My camera doesn’t have a repeater. It’s just a huge coax cable directly from the truck bumper into the camera. Mine is a 2022 though so not sure if something has changed in 2024.

I coiled excess cable in the hitch area and zip tied it together under the trailer frame leaving enough slack to still connect it to the truck.

Unfortunately the trailer is in storage and I’m a couple hours away. Next time I’m there I’ll snap a photo.

I just put a camera on the back of my 22FB Sport. I ran the wire down and under the shell and attached to the propane line and then took the excess and rolled it up and stuck it in the propane storage area.

Mine is the GM camera setup but it sounds very similar to the Ram unit.

I have a wireless Voyager that came with the trailer (soon to be removed) but it is nice to have the display integrated into the truck display. Also the integration should give you more features while driving.

It is good to the manufacturers making these systems to improve towing visibility.

Cable install

Did you just run the cable down the backside on the outside? Then underneath and over axle? Where on the back did you install? Above license plate?

On mine, I just ran the wire along the beltline and down one of the rivet seems using the little stick-on mounts. Then under the belly and over the axle. It is quite noticeable against the aluminum skin but that's okay.

I mounted the camera above the beltline and under the back window. The GM placement wanted it to be at a certain height and angle to work with their transparent trailer view.

I will consider routing the wire differently (inside the trailer) after we use it a bit and see how good it works.

My first impressions are great! The camera still needs to be calibrated with the truck but as soon as I turned it on, I was getting a 3 camera screen showing the 2 sides and back of the trailer! When I turned, the view would jump to the side and show the ground and trailer. After many years, this really made trailering more comfortable.

When we get ready for our first camping in March/April 2025. I will setup the transparent feature of the camera. The trailer is parked right now so I can't do the calibration.

Does the Ram system give you several views to play with?

Here’s the install I did of the RAM camera. We made a bracket and attached via the screws that hold the license plate light on. Spray painted the cable silver, and used some zip ties with adhesive backing to run down the aluminum. The rest of the cable is zip tied to the propane line under the trailer.

That looks much cleaner than my install. I will try it out this coming season and if it is really good, I will run the wires internally.

I might paint the black casing that runs down the back of the trailer to match yours!

I bit the bullet and drilled

I think it is worth it as I love the rear view mirror setup now. Just ran it inside to the front of wheels and then out and attached to gas line to front hitch.
