Brian, where did you end up mounting the camera? I’m going to be doing this in December...

Jay: I'm curious if you run into the calibration issue I do where every time you turn off the ignition the camera looses calibration and it has to recalibrate? This is the only annoying thing I find with the camera.

Short answer: No, I do not.

Longer answer: The first camera I purchased (replaced under warranty due to bad connector) only ever calibrated once. When I finally got around to hooking up the new one, the existing calibration settings "worked". I had invisible trailer, but it was really distorted. I forced a new calibration and the view worked much, much better. My truck required a 2nd calibration on the 2nd drive (I'm thinking "here we go again....") but it's been rock-steady ever since. I shut the truck off immediately after the first calibration was complete, so maybe I shut down the system too quickly before everything could be saved?

I can confidently say yours is not working correctly. My story shows the calibration is not camera-specific. This implies that you have a problem with the video display module (or whatever they're calling it). If this were my situation, I would be giving my dealer the full court press on getting to the bottom of it. My dealer wasn't interested in helping me. I filled out the post-service survey honestly. Within several days, GM Corporate called me and wanted more details. They then scheduled service appointments with a different dealer who didn't return my truck until they had an answer. If your guys aren't interested in fixing things, call GM customer service directly and get them to own your problem. These guys (well, ladies actually) are really good.

Good luck. And let me know how you make out with this...either here or on the other forum that we run into each other.

I mounted the camera directly to the bottom center of Lucy's rear glass. I used automotive grade two-sided tape. I covered the entire mounting bracket. We are going to run the camera cable directly above the upper belt line. The first attaching bracket to the body will be just several inches down the line from the camera. This will provide a tether for the camera in case the mount comes loose.

I will get you some pictures as soon as Hurricane Sally pulls out of here. The rain has been incessant. As of this morning we are up to 17" since Monday night.

We have only made one test run with the camera calibrated. During this test run, we did shut the tow vehicle off three or four times. Each time when we restarted the vehicle the camera had remained calibrated and displayed the stitched together image.

I’d love a photo later but there is no urgency. Stay dry and safe!

Hi Bruce. Here are a couple of photos of the GM camera mounted to Lucy's back glass.

is that camera a permanent mount or one that you remove once you get to your campsite?

That is the permanent mounting for the camera. The cable has not yet been routed in the photograph. I will send further photos when the installation is complete.

GM Camera and Fiamma bike rack

We would like to install the GMC rear camera but the bikes/bike rack would interfere with the camera view I expect. Can the camera be location be altered (higher)? Does anyone have any experience with this issue and/or know of a work-around? Thanks.

You can mount the camera wherever you want; it will function as a fantastic high-definition rear-view camera. The greater distance you mount it from the idea range in the GM instructions, the higher the risk the transparent trailer view won't be able to calibrate. Shorter trailers are a little more forgiving in this regard.

I would think that you could fabricate a mount on the bike rack that would work. The camera would need to be placed where the lens could not see anything attached to the trailer.

We decided to route the GM Camera cable above Lucy's upper beltline on the street side of the trailer. We probably would have run it below the beltline, but that is where Lucy's party lights are installed.

There are few options unless you have a dealer willing to help out. I did my own and routed under the Airstream, but I really like the idea of running it where the awning is as well.

Hint: If you do run under the Airstream, look for the 3M heavy outdoor stick tape. The zip-tie mounts have sticky back adhesive, but it's really not designed to hold up to outdoor elements. I've had really good luck with the 3M heavy-duty outdoor double-stick tape. I highly recommend it.

I just installed the GM Transparent Camera on my Flying Cloud 30RB and used this thread for information on how others did the install. It was a big help and I thank those posters. It went well and I have the view dialed in just about perfectly. The camera had to be mounted on the rear glass because the tailgate camera is so high on my 2020 Silverado 2500HD. I routed the cable in the photo so that I can still open the rear window enough to get a breeze on cool nights. I used the cable ties shown below to route the cable underneath the trailer up to the rear most axle. There are other places to support the cable from there on to the front of the trailer. These ties are very secure once attached to the aluminum under belly and I have no fear they will come lose. The excess cable was coiled and laid it on top of the spare tire. It should ride there without any problems.
