2019 Silverado / Sierra Side-View Mirrors?

Do you have a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra? If so, I'd like to hear from you regarding the side-view mirrors.

Describe your mirrors. Do you use mirror extensions - slip-on, strap-on (come on... no jokes here!), clamp-on, etc. Tell me how the 2019 mirrors compare to other tow vehicle mirrors you've used.

Here's the backstory:

At this point in time GM is not offering what I'd call trailering mirrors - at least not the type of trailering mirrors I'd hoped for. Yes, you can still get the Max Trailering Package on Silverado and Sierra but it does not come with (nor can you buy from GM) an extending tow mirror. Instead there is an option for Trailer Camera Package ($250) which requires several trim level upgrades as well as an upgraded Nav/Display unit and ultimately adds about $3000 to the price of the vehicle. The trailer camera package is said to include something on the side-view mirrors that displays on the Nav unit as well as a trailer camera that keeps an eye on things in the rear of the vehicle or maybe is even added to the rear of the trailer.

Lots of unknows and speculation on my part and the dealers don't seem to know what's going on so I thought I'd pose my questions/concerns on this forum.

I am confused. My 2018 GMC has the extendable mirrors. You just pull them out to extend them. Wish they were powered extendable, but at least they are power folding.

The 2019 models do not have the same mirrors as 2018. Apparently there is no intention of providing the same extendable towing mirror that was available on earlier models.

The 2019 truck is almost entirely new. For instance, your mirrors are mounted to the window area on door at the apex of the window. The 2019 mirrors are mounted on the sheet metal panel of the door. Probably still confused. Suffice it to say the 2019 is very different when it comes to side-view mirrors.

Hopefully some 2019 owners will reply to this thread. The first picture is a 2018 with towing mirrors. The second picture is a 2019 - large, extendable towing mirrors are not an option at this point and I suspect never will be. Instead GM has changed to a Trailer Camera Package as mentioned in the third and fourth pictures.

The 2019 Trailer Camera Package may be a very worthwhile feature. If anyone has said option please elaborate.

The "spy" photos of the 2020 "HD" trucks (2500/3500 series) all show trailering mirrors which I am sure will fit on the 1500 series too. I suspect that these mirrors will eventually be added to the NHT Max Trailering Pkg. once they are set up in GM's manufacturing system. I'd just try to be patient and wait until the mirrors are available (possibly by mid to late 2019).

My GMC 2500 Sierra has mirrors that extend 4 inches, but I don't need to extend, pulling a 23' International. Mirrors are great as-is.

Hubby found mirrors specifically made for one's TV model. We are very pleased with ours.

FWIW. I have a 2017 which doesn't have tow mirrors. We bought CIPA slip on extensions and they've worked great. Combined with the camera on the back of our Globetrotter (which helps to confirm distance after passing a vehicle), they've proven to be very useful.

I have the factory extendable mirrors and a rear camera system from Garmin. While there are likely better rear camera options, I want to add to the discussion that I really like the extendable mirrors and a rear camera always displaying what is behind me when pulling a 27fb. From reading this string apparently GM feels that extendable mirrors are no longer needed with their camera system. I would need that proven to me. Good luck!

When I went to the Chevy site and did a build on a 2019 2500, in Step 7, Accessories, there is the option for black or chrome trailer mirrors.

I can't get the image to load but they are the same ones I have on my 2008 2500 and are manually extending. They work great towing our 28'FC.

I apologize for some of the confusion... I should have specifically said I am referring to the 1500 series Silverado / Sierra. I thought that would have been obvious since the pictures I posted are for the 1500 truck. In addition, I referred to the new body style which is limited to the 1500 at this point (I think). It's my understanding the body changes for the 2500 are not part of the 2019 truck lineup.

You are correct in that the newest body series has not yet been introduced for the 2500 and 3500 models. That will happen for the 2020 year model. However, my point is the same as the 1500/2500/3500 have about ninety-five percent body parts compatibility, including side mirrors (standard and optional like the trailer towing mirrors). So once the 1500 series trailer towing side mirrors are introduced, they will be the same part numbers as their counterparts on the 2500 and 3500 series trucks. Does that make sense?

Yes, I understand exactly what you're talking about. I was referring to dkdouglas who said he went to the configuration tool and found towing mirrors were available on a 2019 2500/3500. I was not entirely clear on the fact that I was referring to 2019 1500 Silverado/Sierra.


Conventional towing mirrors as we all know them are not currently available for the 1500 and I'm not entirely convinced they will be the same as the 2500/3500 when those new models are introduced. I know the body styles have been the same in the past but I'm not convinced that will be the case in the future. Case in point... Suburban. Several years ago GM decided to make the Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon XL/Yukon an entirely different body style than the truck lineup. I wouldn't be surprised if they are doing that same thing - making a distinction between everyday trucks and work trucks. I've seen reference to this on truck web sites.


I also realize what you said regarding the manufacturing system is very true. For instance GM is only offering two interior colors at the moment on the 1500 models. That will certainly change as time passes. I hope conventional tow mirrors will become available for the 1500 series - whether as an option or to be taken from the 2500/3500 or even a third party.


As an example of how complicated mirrors can become... I attempted to purchases replacement towing mirrors for our 2005 Chevrolet Suburban and it was not easy. There were very limited offerings for that particular year due to prior year and later year electrical connector changes. They all looked the same from the outside but the 'guts" were different.

I came across a website that sold extendable towing mirrors with a utube video showing how to replace the factory mirrors with their mirrors. They show how to connect all of the electrical components of your current factory mirrors, heating, folding, etc. Go to " clear view towing mirrors"

I have a love/hate relationship with my towing mirrors on my 2017 Silverado with Max Tow package. Let me preface by saying that I previously owned a 2014 Chevy with standard mirrors. I love them for towing and seeing to the rear, but really dislike how they block the side views in normal day to day driving. They are much higher than the standard mirrors and significantly block the view right and left at intersections.

You do have a point about larger mirrors blocking some side view either side, but in my opinion that pales to the ability to see better with the larger mirrors.

My 250 has larger side-out mirrors that I absolutely use. Our small car has the backup camera that I still DON'T use even after several years. Old habits I guess...

I do like (and don't have) a camera on the back of the Airstream which I feel would help when pulling back into a lane after passing.

Let's hope the towing mirrors on the 1500 6.2L come available as I have that on the 'wish list' !!

Yes I had gone to the 2500 build and not the 1500. But I did just build roughly the same 1500 truck and the final price was only $3000 less that the 2500 build. For me towing a 28" Airstream, I would go with the 2500 and have the reserve capacity for all the accessories I carry in the truck. But that starts a whole new discussion all over again. :-) Anyway I do hope Chevy adds more interior colors and real towing mirrors to the 1500. My son told me Chevy never had the option for towing mirrors like the 2500 has.

I have the max trailer package mirrors. The top portion of each mirror adjusts remotely. The bottom portion does not. They extend manually. They provide a decent side view. I balked at the trailer camera package and purchased an aftermarket 'multiplexer' that allows me to switch between cameras as well as look at multiple cameras together. It works well. I purchased two side view and one rear view camera which I attached to the trailer and ran cables to a connector. It works very well. It was a pita to run all the cables but if you like a fiddle its an amusing project. The purchase price of the multiplexer, the wiring, the cameras, and connectors was approximately 1000 CDN. The install time was significant.
