I wonder what kind of navigation maps you have. I have a 2017 and I still have not had an update to my navigation maps. Lots of things wrong! Don’t use it. Incredibly frustrating. I’ll never get a NAV system from Ford again.

You have to order updated Sync maps.Pull out your navigation SD card to see which one u have currently.I find EBay to have the best prices.

The 2017 does not have an SD card. It is updated directly from Ford. That’s the problem. I’ve called Ford directly about it.

The factory installed GPS systems, in theory, only have to be supported for seven years just like the other parts of the vehicle. My Honda motorcycle lost factory update service at five years and I had to go to third party and then finally a handlebar mounted Garmin GPS.

My 2007 Mercedes ML320 CDI GPS map was last updated in 2015 for $249.00 with no other options available going forward. I use a Garmin RV GPS dash mounted when towing.

It is a total waste of money, and I will never ever buy a nav system on the Ford. They do not update their maps with their new system. Save yourself the coin and by a good Garmin. Free updates.

Also if I buy one on the lot I’m going to demand they discount the price of it off the top after I’ve negotiated the price down. They are not going to sell me that piece of junk.

There is no removable SD cards in the factory installed Ford Nav system. You have to updated it through the built in settings program.
And yes the Ford maps suck and make sure you have a back up with you.

I've been fine with the maps on my 2017 F150 so far but when traveling I generally use Apple Play and Google Maps or Apple Maps (both work). The only downside is that in that configuration you cannot see the outside temperature, which I wanted when I was towing in the winter.

That being said, I do not know why GPS systems in the trucks do not recognize when you are towing and give you additional choices or restrictions built into the suggested route. It should not be difficult to do.

Ford sells map updates starting every year for $150. They only update the maps themselves: new roads, changes etc. not a regular necessity.

If there is a concern with the way nav functions that can be addressed with an update to the SYNC module which is located in the APIM module. These will update the SYNC 3.X software to the latest version. The software is supported under the original manufacturers warranty, three years, 36,000 mile base warranty.

Any Ford or Lincoln dealer will/should update sync for you for free. You need to give them a symptom... Nav does not work properly, phone drops calls etc. If you are out of original warranty then there will be a slight charge .3 to .5 hours approximate.

Our 2012 Ram 2500HD Cummins has the last $150 GPS map update and it was a 2017 version. That was less than four years after the build date. I use a Rand McNally 730 RV GPS model when towing.

What they don’t tell you is you have to take truck in every couple of years for software updates.

I have an 2016 F150 Lariat that I bought used in January. Its Sync software had not been updated but I found it simple to do so. I went to owner.ford.com, got an account and entered my VIN. That allowed me to download the Sync 3 software update, for free, onto a 32 Gig USB thumb drive. If there are any troubles they have people standing by to answer your questions in chat sessions. I plugged it into the USB and it did the rest. Quite simple. However, it turns out I needed a more modern USB module for it to work properly with Apple CarPlay. I bought that at a local dealer for about $48 dollars and installed it myself (see videos on Youtube). Five minutes, max. Now I have Airplay, Waze and Google Maps, all of which get updated continuously.
I agree that the onboard systems are not worth much; but that is not specific to Ford. We had a new highway constructed here in South Bend, IN more than six years ago (pre 2013) and no car navigation system has even had this divided state highway in its system: not a 2016 Subaru, not a 2017 Nissan, and not the 2016 Ford. I can update the Nissan for $125, but why would I? Apple maps, Waze and Google Maps are all up to date and cost nothing. All in all, much better than the old AAA Tripticks.
I do also agree that it would be nice to know the temperature when using CarPlay. I think I might just Ask Siri when I need to know.

You probably know this but if you have the Sync app on CarPlay you can see the temp by just opening that from the CarPlay home screen. Or by asking Siri (which is what I do because I’m usually interested in weather at my destination). But I agree it would be nice if the outside temp was available on the dash.

2019 F-150 Payload

Congratulations on your truck purchase. I'm amazed that you were able to find a suitably equipped truck with a healthy payload. I had been looking at the 2018 F-150's here in British Columbia and could not find anything available higher than an XL model that was appropriate. Most of the XLT's or Lariats were all in the 1400-1500 lbs range.

In the end I purchased a GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Kodiak edition with GM's Max Tow package. Payload is 1976 lbs on my door jamb and the towing as configured with the 5.3l and 3.73 gear ratio is 10,500 lbs. My only 2 beefs with the truck is the fuel tank size, GM still only offers the 92L size tank which means I pack a 5 gal jerry can. Number 2 the truck comes from factory with P-rated car tires, that's a joke considering the towing and payload. I refused the tires and had them put on LT E rated tires before driving off the lot.

Ironically you will pass me both on the hills with Ecoboost and at the gas station while I'm filling up my small tank.

Love my truck and I'm sure you will love yours.

Yes, but since I here on the east coast I seem to either be towing in traffic or on a curvy, hilly road, I prefer not to try to poke at that touch screen too much. To get there you have to poke a few apps, then re-do them to get back to Google maps. It isn't super critical but something I've notice more than once (since I am a weather geek).

Fair enough—I’m the same way about car touch screens, especially on windy roads or traffic. The call button on the wheel or hey Siri work without drawing my attention.

It is odd that none of the weather apps support CarPlay. I get that the point is to keep you from distracted driving but I think a simple radar screen would be no more and possibly less distracting than, say, Maps.

My Volvo has a few weather apps with radar, and Volvo tends towards being grandmotherly about safety.
