2019-2020 Truck Wars, Here we go!

Just for all you CarGuys and CarGirls. I was curious of your thoughts on the new 2019 Ram and soon to be released-2020 GM and Ford HD Trucks.They have all heated up competition. I am not taking issue with any one brand vs another or saying you have to buy new. I do know it would be hard to buy a 19 unless they offered HUGE rebates.

Yet if you're reading comparing and dreaming it sure seems all companies are offering interesting options with more torque towing and trailer friendly technology.

I’ll start,

After all the hype of eco-boost direct injection and turbos, ( and I own one) Ford is now bringing back a push rod good old school 7.3 L port fuel Gas, with some very impressive build qualities. Brings me back to the if it's working and if it ain't broke don’t change it days. This could make a viable option for those not needing or wanting a Diesel.

However then you read the new Diesel numbers for the big three and that’s another interesting read. And now a HD 10 speed joint Ford/GM designed transmission. Allision has let GM now build the 10 speed under supervision in house.

What truck and engine combination would you pick?

The prices make me appreciate my used Ram CTD even more. It just turned 38,000 miles so I think I’m set for a few more years.

Hi, we have an unwritten rule to keep our vehicles for 10 years and / or 100,000 miles. So we might be ready around 2024.

Mine's at 15 years, and I'm finally considering replacing the Chevy Suburban. Only has 127,000 miles, though, so I may wait for the 2020 hot rods.

The baby 10 speed was a joint venture, I don't believe the HD 10 speed is.

The cast iron block and pushrod design makes perfect sense to me, as a recently retired industry professional. It does have variable valve tingeing....but the port injection baffles me (instead of using the more precise direct injection).

Must be a cost thing.

I have a 09 Ram, with the 5.7 Hemi and it currently has 19300 miles. I'll drive it till at least 250000 miles and replace it with the same, but newer. if by that time the 6.4 Hemi is available in the 1500 I would get that!

2019 Toyota Landcruiser LC79 crew cab with the ledgendary 1HZ 6 cylinder diesel. no EGR crap; no engine computer, (mechanical injection), 1 ton payload, half the price of the equivalent big three trucks, and bulletproof reliability.

There are plusses and minuses for all and any 3/4 ton truck would pull any Airstream produced so I will get down to the important distinction; I think the new GM products are kinda ugly but the Ram and Fords look good to me so I'd get one of those :-)

Direct injection as a problem with carbon buildup on the back of the intake valves. Port injection prevents that

Only when non-top tier fuel is used for extended periods. Or very high idle times. Carbon buildup has not been an issue for the last 5 years or so of my career. But old problems persist in the urban legend world.

Ford has a great youtube interview with Mr. Truck at the Auto Show. Direct injection is wonderful on a Diesel.

In a Gas engine it has led to two major industry problems. The Eco-Boost as well as all Direct injections suffer from carbon deposits on the intake valves. So bad that Ford now runs the Eco-Boost in two modes. Port Fuel for idle and low speeds and Direct Injection when needed. The best of both worlds.

However the industry has discovered a new problem. If you research LPSI low speed pre ignition. It has led to piston failures. Us old schools remember pre and post ignition from timing and fuel problems. detonation called spark knock.

Now poor oil control ( Lets not start oil war discussions please ) allows oil to slip up past the low piston skirts and lightweight ring designs cause the gas engine to act like a diesel. The tremendous pressure from the explosion damages pistons. New Oil specs to fight this are being tested and developed by all.

The new 7.3 will use port fuel for longer engine life cleaner valves as so construction vehicles and fleets idle for extended periods. Not so much a towing issue. Hope that explains it.

Back to the 2020 question - I don’t think you can go wrong with a 2020 truck 1/2 ton or HD from any of the big 3. They all pretty much perform the same. When I bought my truck it came down to which one I preferred from a styling perspective.

My Duramax is 10 years old with 185k on the odometer. I am considering a 2020 model this time next year. The Allison transmission has been flawless. The Duramax has been trouble free so far. I keep the trans and engine serviced at recommended intervals.
I have said it before, I don't think you can go wrong with any truck from the big three. What you purchase is personal preference.

I have had GMC products all my life, but I will NEVER buy another one and neither should you... here's why...

I'm all for capitalism and have also been a conservative all my life as well. But GM continues to build products in Mexico and China while screwing its loyal American workforce and the taxpayers who funded their survival years ago. I will fight socialism till hell freezes over and then fight it on the ice... but when it finally comes, I will look to companies like GM and not wonder why I lost the battle...

So, if I had to buy a new truck today, it would be ANYTHING besides a GM product... most likely a Ford gasser...

Pay your money make your choice that's still America, but I sure hope you can sleep at night driving a GM truck...

You're off on the cause and effect on several of these points. But phone is not the device for that response

It’s interesting that Ford is addressing intake valve cleaning in their engine design again.

I have the GM 6.2L with direct injection and I love it. The power and fuel economy are exceptional. Since fuel does not pass over the intake valves with direct injection, the crud from crank case ventilation gets burned onto the back of the intake valves. It used to be that the detergents in fuel would keep these clean. I added a catch can to collect the crud before it goes back into the intake in hopes of keeping my intake valves cleaner.

I bought the 2019 Ram 1500 Limited with the 5.7 Hemi engine plus e-torque option a few months ago. I couldn't be happier. Before buying I spent quite a bit of time comparing, test driving, etc. before my purchase. For me it's the perfect truck and more than enough for my 22ft Sport.

You cannot buy a truck by a brand. All brands built truck according to the requirements of what you are going to use it for. You must do the math on what features you need. If you going to haul the kids and their kayaks down to lake or tow a pop up camper. You can buy the deal at the dealer and get the cheap truck model with the great so-called markdown. Take it home and then you realize I needed the total tow package, towing mirrors, a receiver hitch rated at 8,800 lbs etc. Then they get home and figure out that oh, I bought a TV that won’t do the work I needed. Then they post on this forum that Ford or Chevy or Dodge won’t tow. ALL TRUCK ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL. All engines are not created equal. All rear ends are not created equal. All chassis are not created equal. But all that stuff goes into a formula and it’s called algebra. The dealer will sell you what you want or ask for. But if you don’t know or ask the right questions they won’t volunteer and tell you. You can buy a 150/1500 series truck that will tow 8,800 pounds or 12,500 pounds but if you don’t specify what you need when you purchase it and get the things on the truck that enables the truck to do it it’s your fault not the dealer or manufacture. I see it all the time. You have a 19 to 22 foot trailer and you buy a truck to tow it. The good deal truck will most likely do it. Then you decide you want to trade up and get a 25 to 30 foot trailer. Then you realize I bought the wrong truck. Where did the savings go? Spend the extra 7 to 8 thousand and have the truck you need. When I bought my truck on the end of the year savings it only cost me about three more thousand and I was able to almost double the towing capability. Don’t look at the brand, study the options, do your homework before going to the dealer. Ask the right questions. Don’t trust the salesman’s answers. Study the towing charts. Them compare the math.
