2018 F150 w 3.0L Power Stroke Diesel

Hi all,

First time poster here. My wife and I have been planning on purchasing an AS for our future travels, and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the new 2018 F150 with the diesel engine? We'd be towing fairly frequently, as most of our travels would be during the summer, and we're eyeing a size 23 model, with the largest being a 27, as we like to frequent national parks. We live on the East Coast, but we would be spending a good amt of time in Utah/Colorado, so pulling up/descending down steep grades is a significant factor in the decision.

There has been some recent discussion. Seems they are a bit light duty for mountain towing, and the payload is not the greatest with the extra weight of the diesel.

Watch the payload! Check the sticker on the drivers door.

it's "funny" - the expedition has a listed 1750# payload capacity... 700# more and can still tow 9300#... might do some research on towing fuel mileage and go that route if the numbers are appealing. thanks for the input!

Be careful reading "listed" specs on payload...each vehicle is different depending on options, and most of us here understand the "specs" and the actual "sticker" on the door never are the same... the sticker is the bible. My 2011 Tahoe (1250lb) actually had more "payload" then my 2012 F150 Platinum (1039lbs) but I did not know about this important stuff until I started reading the Forum and checked...what a surprise! For 2 years, I was driving around with my F150EB, pulling my 25'AS with 800+lbs tongue weight, loaded with kayaks, dog, generator, camping gear, bbq, wood, etc....and I was at least 200-300 lbs overloaded at times...did not know it.

As for your question about the new Ford diesel in the F150, if it were me, I would go for the 3.6EB engine..plenty of torque (470lbs on the EB vs 440lbs for new diesel) good gas mileage with EB (if you can keep your foot off the accelerator!) solid engine and 10 speed transmission. The F150EB will do great job pulling your AS. Plus, oil changes are cheaper with the gas vs diesel and no fuel filter change every few oil changes to worry about with the gas EB. And....gas is much cheaper. We put 130K+ miles on that F150EB in 5 years...no issues at all. Pulled 2 different 25' AS models...loved it. Good luck!

Proper use of a weight-distribution hitch takes care of “payload” problems as the TW Load on the rear axle is reduced 50%.

Thousands of owners covered all of North America using cars with 1100-lb payloads and the largest of this trailer type fifty years ago. Ours had an 1100-Lb tongue weight.

A pickup isn’t the first choice, but the last. Not a good choice if reducing risk and promoting stability is important.

That it’s become default is due to (willful) ignorance.

Take your time, OP. Start over at Can Am RV and videos. The owner posts here quite often . (10,000 plus tow rigs set up). You can bet the detractors aren’t consultants to SAE or Airstream, as he is.

What we learned by trial his firm has formulated as rules that work. Appearance is far from everything.
