2013-2017 Ram 2500 Cummins Water Pump Recall

Got a recall notice about water pumps, T51, could fail and cause engine fire. No parts available yet. Hmm, already had my catalytic replaced earlier in the year.

Anyone had this recall performed and had the water pump replaced?

Kelvin

Come join cumminsforum, multiple threads over there.

Rumor is you can order an Italian replacement through your local Cummins shop, but FCA dealers will only replace your current pump with the same thing if you are having trouble. Otherwise you’re stuck until the official part is out.

A diesel tech who I trust told me to look for a leak around the pump. If it’s not leaking than don’t worry about it until parts become available.

I just called a local dealer near me. The service department doesn't think the parts will be available until March/April and has about 4000 trucks in this area to be recalled. I expect this recall will take over a year to get all affected vehicles processed. Hope my water pump doesn't fail as we tour the southwest.

Some posters on other forums are finding diesel shops to replace the pump and then getting reimbursed from Chrysler

FYI, Post Recall water pump from Geno's. They are a very reputable supplier for Dodge Ram Cummins OE and aftermarket parts. I personally buy from them.

I am a Cummins warranty person, it is recommended, not to drive, if you must drive inspect every time to drive. Local dealerships have been instructed not to sell any of these years . Confirm with your local dealerships what is there policy.

I'm a full timer. Can't stop to wait 6 months for the parts to arrive and get an appointment.

My local dealer told me, "We don't have the replacement part. When we get them, we'll call you."

What has been happening is the pump seizes up, and the serpentine belt starts slipping and breaks...then engine heats up...stop and have it towed to the nearest dealer...4000 miles up to 45000 miles it can happen....it doesn’t need to leak to seize up...watch your gauges

This is interesting...I wonder whether A) a dealer would install this for free if I brought the part, and B) whether the part would be covered under warranty like FCA's approved water pump would be covered?

Jim

Service guy at a local dealership told me that they hadn’t determined just what the problem was with the current water pump - bad parts vs bad design - and they wouldn’t have replacements available until they figured it out. Who knows.

Hadn't heard of this recall back in September when it was announced. We've traveled almost 5k miles since then so hopefully all will be well before we have the work performed in the next 3k miles.

What! They know exactly what the problem is...the bearing seizes up, Cummins tried to save fifty cents and it didn’t work, my 07 went 100,000 before it went south....

I found his response a little curious since places like Genos are selling post recall water pumps.

My water pump failed in November 2016 and destroyed the serpentine belt. They replaced the pump. I was on the hook for the belt and a coolant flush and fill. I am on the road and don't know now if this recall applies to the pump they installed. I will ask the dealer at my next service in Jan.

Why did you have to pay for those parts when the pump failed? What year was yours?

I assumed the pump failure was a one off. The dealer didn’t mention a recall. When I go for my next service check in Jan I will get the information.
I have a 2013

Look at the third picture on the linked pump, the correctly drilled vent hole is circled. The factory pumps under recall don't have it (vent or weep hole) so water seal leak can run into the bearing, if past that bearing seal, then bearing failure. If I can find the FCA page with all the facts and caveats, for repair or replace, I'll post it. You can see the hole on yours if you have it, no hole, needs new pump.

Yes, watch temps, but the bearing contamination is all internal, if no vent/weep hole, no indications until failure.

Folks that fixed already have some reimbursement clause.

Update: read the "Install And Tech Information" on the link above for more accurate and complete info.

I wonder if you purchased the Geno pump and then took it to a dealer if they would install it via warranty. Or would you have submit a reimbursement request to FCA
