Well that 9000 lb tow rating on the Nissan Titan might be a stretch huh?

I was at my Toyota dealer today to have my lower ball joints replaced (recall) on my 03 Tundra. The sales manager does not expect to see an 07 untill the 4th quarter this year.

Anyone know what the price range might be around.I am thinking in the close to 40+.Hopefully it wont be that high.I really do not want to spend the money.I will only be usiing it for mostly towing the Airstream and that is it.It would last a veerrryyy long time though.

We have towed a 38' SOb since 96 with a chevy 3/4 turbo deisel. Great power and MPG. now we have a deisel AS MH our son is pulling the SOB wth a 3/4 Dodge and he is happy with MPG and power. Deisel is costlier per gal now but we have found that we get better MPG than our friends that have gas pickups. The Dodge has really proven to us that it is top of the line on fuel and price to operate.

Devoman, the issue is not that the Tundra may or may not be able to tow a 25' or larger coach, the issue is that there isn't a lot of solid info to go by. If you need a vehicle now (btw, I pm'd you about your current combo), you should look for more conventional tow vehicles unless you want to wait to see what Toyota comes out with. I will say that with a 25' widebody coach that could have a wet weight of 7000lbs, passengers, cargo, fuel, etc, you are right in the 3/4 ton crosshairs.

Not that I am suggesting you do what I did, but I love our '04 Suburban (3/4 ton 6.0L 4.10s) towing our 25' Safari. I know it doesn't have the upgraded interior that the new models have or will have, but tows the Safari very well. No overheating issues, LOTS of room, 11-13mpg towing, and I hardly know the Safari is back there, it's that solid. It's totally effortless, even in higher wind conditions due mostly to the wheelbase. You can pick up a used one for between 25k and 33k (compared to the 52k new list price, 42k after all those rebates). There are other great vehicles out there too, just make sure that what you look closely. I know lots of dealers and manufacs put some real big tow numbers out there, the Titan was one of those vehicles, but after you do the math and read the facts, you find what the reality is. To date, the only tow ratings I'd be inclined to trust would be GM, Ford and Dodge (in that order). I've found very little but funny math and empty add ons that make the ratings of others totally reliable. Again, this is not to say the others are not good vehicles, they are, but most of them don't have what it takes. Pretty package, no meat in most cases. Our Burb isn't pretty, but it's got what it takes. No funny gearing, etc. Just 3/4 ton drivetrain.

I will be waiting to see what they have here soon on the Tundra.I know I will get a great deal and I am not worried if I do end up getting a Tundra but there are other options I will be looking at before I get one.I just want to make sure I get the right vehicle for the Airstream and a comfortable ride with the bells and whistles for the family.I am not saying I am already sticking to the Tundra though but when I here the reviews and if they are good ones,Then I will see if it is the right one for me.You never know....I might just convert to an American vehicle for the first time.

Looking at the Tundra specs I do see pretty good payload. They are better than my former Nissan Titan. Click around and look at the different numbers. It is always a fact that 2WD payload will be higher than 4WD due to extra weight of transfer box & 2nd differential on exactly same suspension setup. John 'Pahaska' Irwin chose 2WD a couple years back -- I don't know what he thinks of it now.

The May 2006 Four Wheeler magazine Limited Articualtion column (entitled: On the verge of the diesel decade?) states: rumor has it... ; that Toyota will offer some sort of diesel hybrid (!) on the new-for-'07 Tundra pickup. That may entice me to return but they also have to offer real towing mirrors from the factory.

This morning's Minneapolis Star Tribune states that the new Tundra stats will be released on January 7th at the Detroit Auto Show. Also says that it will offer a bigger interior on the Crew-Max cab option, larger than the current Double Cab. Of course the current models are a smaller truck so this should be an easy promise to deliver on. No word on doors or number of seats. I checked their website and it is is very skimpy on details at present.

The Tundra could be called a "heavy half ton" according to my sources. I suspect that they will depend on a lot of current Toyota truck owners to "move up" as opposed to taking market share from domestic brands. The diesel and 3/4 chassis are not set in stone.

Accessories will be for appearance, off road and interior.

SEMA scheduled a SEMA Measuring Session with Toyota and its all-new 2007 fullsize Tundra. SEMA manufacturing members are encouraged to sign up to measure the vehicle for product development. Attendees with prototypes or parts created from measurements of the Tundra Measuring Session conducted earlier this year are encouraged to use this opportunity to ensure that those parts fit correctly.
According to Toyota, 200,000 Tundras will be produced annually, and the truck is set to launch in February of 2007.
The session is set for Monday through Wednesday, January 8 -10, 2007, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cameras are permitted.

We have a 2006 double door V8 4WD Tundra gas hog that ran around 36K. Tow load is 6700 pounds. Our 03 Ford 7.3 diesel gets more MPH and cost around 36K with a tow loar of 8000 pounds. A Tundra one ton with a well tested diesel may sell but that will be another ten years if it's on the drawing board today.

Thought you all might be interested to see a spy photo (camera phone) of the new Toyota Tundra CrewMax. Toyota will formally announce this vehicle January 8th.

Although Toyota is releasing the Double Cab (new name for access cab) and regular cab sometime in February the CrewMax will not be available until later in 2007.

What's also interesting is I believe 3 bed configurations will be available with the new Tundra. Short, Regular & Long. Picture is of a CrewMax short bed. I can only imagine what a CrewMax long bed would look like!

When I bought my current truck, I could afford either a diesel or 4WD , but not both.

Downside of 2WD is that I could use 4WD to prevent spraying mud or gravel at times, but the 2WD sits a bit lower (which I prefer), gets a bit better fuel mileage, and definitely tracks a lot better with a less steering corrections than my former 4WD.

I never have been in a place with with either TV where I really needed 4WD to prevent getting stuck.

I would choose the 2WD diesel again.

There is a 4.0L V6, a 4.7L V8 and a 5.7L V8. Anybody looking at a 5000# trailer should only be looking at the 5.7L V8 -- 381 HP@5600 RPM, 401 lb.ft.@3600 RPM.

The rear differential ratio is 4.10, 10.5" diameter for the standard truck, but 4.30, 10.5" for the tow package. How will this translate compared to our normal understanding of these numbers? It may come out a bit different -- the tranny is a 6 speed auto with a 5th gear ratio of 0.728 and a 6th gear ratio of 0.588. And such a high tow capacity is all done with gearing. Anybody know what the top end gear ratio on an F-150 or a GM 1500 is?

My impression -- don't just look at tow capacity. Also consider the tow vehicle payload. You must add together weights of your fuel, passengers, cargo, tonneau or topper, and hitch weight -- and not exceed the payload on the tow vehicle. The '07 Tundra payload is not greatly different than the F-150 for instance. And the Tundra is a new model.

Interesting fact - Toyota's CrewMax outsizes the Dodge MegaCab.

Optional 5.7 litre V8 that puts out 381hp and 401lb.-ft. of torque.

Tow capacity = 10,800 for the regular cab with largest engine & tow package. 10,400 lb rating on the CrewMax with largest engine & tow package.

Independent testing has shown that it accelerates from 0-60mph 2 seconds faster than the competition with an 8,500 pound load.
