Question 2007 Toyota Tundra

I am a San Antonio native with long roots in Texas. Toyota's plans to upgrade the Tundra's size and capacity are veiled in mystery to this point. The new San Antonio Plant is due to produce the only Tundras for the 2007 model year. The Indiana plant is scheduled to re-tool for the newTundra models.

Many car mag sites have spy photos of Tundras with no clear clues about the coming revisions. It seems the Chicago auto show may begin to reveal plans and capacities within a week or so. See: http://www.thecarconnection.com/Enth...178.A9949.html ... and: http://www.autoblog.com/2006/01/18/a...ut-at-chicago/ ... and: http://www.topix.net/autos/toyota-tundra

We may see an honest 1/2-tonner at the start. Do you have info and web sources discussing higher capacity or engine options (diesel)? Please share here!

IMHO it seems that Ford's plans to only begin to produce better interiors for 2007 may be a bit tardy (considering that the Titan had side curtain air bags 2 years ago!). Please share opinions, views & the inside scoop on what you've scrounged on Toyota vs. the Big Three!!

On your mark, get set....

[From a personal perspective, I cannot wait for the Tundra line to prove itself -- I need 3/4-ton capacity right away.]

canoe stream.......

1 ton toyota for 07.....it's done. visited a vip booth/auto show and midwest v.p. shared a laptop slide show of the model, specs and so on. photos not allowed, but several male models in the video were wearing big belt buckles....really big ones....they would not share the model name........not a tundra it seems.

pic in last post is pretty close to what i saw...give or take some chrome, nerf bars, wheel well flairs, and so on......

specs suggested same interior sq ft as ford....and nearly same gas engine power....i don't think i saw any diesel listed but....may have missed it....as good as toyotas are i still wouldn't buy a full size on for a few years....i like tow command, mirrrors, built in brake controller on the ford....

and toyota is about to surpass gm as the worlds largest auto maker.......

i'm used to audi interiors......so the 05 superduty insides were a real adjustment.......but i have quickly grown to like the lariat model...

including the fake wood trim........which really sort of makes me feel like i'm drivin' a 70s brady bunch station wagon......

yes ford has aluminized/audized the interior on the f150 and new exploder..... and will on the 250/350....but this look will grow old quickly and in mass market execution......isn't any nicer than the current interior....

head rests could improve on the ford.....but the 60/40 seats are pretty good....and the interior has been more solid/functional than i expected it to be......

cheers

Talked to an automotive journalist friend of mine right after the Tundra intro in Chicago. Concenus among writers was that Toyota played it safe and opted out of offering a diesel that would have blown the 1/2 ton market out of the water!

you know, I just don't get these comments. it always WAS an honest 1/2 ton. Its got the same tow rating as my dodge, and very similar payload.

When I was shopping for my truck a few years back, (and I was really "shopping"...I didn't know what I wanted, byond "full size truck"), that was the first thing I looked at when comparing the available models, and the first thing to be removed from consideration...because they were all the same. or close enough to not be worthy of consideration. payload, capacities, towing...price. all too close to each other to be of any concern. The decision wound up being much more heavily based on more "subjective" matters. performance and price were nearly equal amongst the 4 (at that time) candidates.

Re: '07 Tundra pics~and look at those cup holders! When we were shopping for our TV, able to tow our 30' Classic Limited in the Mountain West, we wanted a Toyota truck because we are "Toyota people" from way back. The Tundra then was a great truck, but too underpowered for our AS. Now that this is coming out (it's reputed to pull 10000 lbs), I wish. . .! No, our Chevy is fine, but we love the idea of a mighty Toyota Tundra! We'll have to take a test drive anyway. Uh oh! ~G

New Tundra

Oh, I want one of these. I tow with a Toyota Landcruiser and I'm very reluctant to move away from Toyota. I've got 108,000 miles on mine and have only had one thing break. It was the key fob with remote opener.

opinions here please- I am looking at trucks, as my 03 Grand cherokee lease is over. I will probably buy used, and I am more concerned about a lower mileage unit than what year model it is.
Love the Toyotas, and also considering a Dodge Ram diesel, as I hear some great stuff about their longevity and reliability. I am open to a GM duramax, but not a big Ford fan.
Oh the kicker is at some point I might be getting a 28-31' Airstream trailer, 70s or 80s vintage and I would of course have to tow it with whatever truck I buy.
I would like to know your experiences withe the Cummins vs Duramax, and whether or not I should even consider a used 4 yr old or? Toyota Tundra. Those new Nissan's are sharp but not in my range at this time.

I have a 2004 Tundra and a 25' Safari. I towed to AZ last year (about 6000 miles round trip) and was ok on most roads but it worked hard to get over the mountains... I am anxiously awaiting the release of the new Tundra in that I love the truck but would like more power.

Alan, I have an '02 Tundra with the V6 that I absolutely love. I can't ever forsee getting rid of it. Forget the Tundra though, even with the V8 engine for anything larger than 25', especially with any wide-body vintage trailers. Frankly, a wide-body 25' is probably pushing a Tundra V8. The Duramax is excellent as is the Cummins in the Dodge. I think the Cummins is a little noisier, but I suspect that's subjective. I remember some issues with the early Dodge auto trans, but I believe those have all been resolved.

Alan--Last oct I had a chance to trade our Nissan Titan and older Toyota for a low mileage 04 2wheel Dr. Duramax 2500. We were towing a 25'classic with the Titan and planed to use it to tow our new 30' classic that was on order at the time. We now have taken delivery of the 30'classic. The duramax handles this trailer with ease with mileage in the 14-15 mpg towing and driving conservitively. Dodge and Ford have gone to electronic injectors and are much quieter in the last few years. Duramax had them from the get go and were and still are somewhat quieter but not the big difference there used to be. While toyota builds a great vehicle the tundra is just short of power for what you want. I tow often with a friend who has one and pulls a 27 ft SOB. It's pedal to the medal and 7-8 mpg most of the time. I found a good buy on our used Duromax simply because it was 2 wheel drive. Where we live 4x2's are hard to sell and the dealer was anxious to move it. ---Pieman

From my brief research looking at the Titans... the Tundra V8, Titan V8, the F150 in the V8, Dodge V8 and the Chevy 1500 in the V8 are all in about the same class; none of which are in the 3/4 ton Duramax/Cummins/Ford 6.0l or 7.3l diesel class. I wouldn't recommend anything less than a 3/4 ton for a 28' or above trailer. Yes, I know that there are folks out there who tow 32' trailers with 1/2 ton trucks. I just am not one of those folks. As you probably already know, I tow my 34' with an Excursion V10. I wouldn't want anything less for 28' and up.

I have a 2000 Tundra. Pulled my 19' Bambi with no effort. However, it struggles with my new 25' Safari. The hill counrty of Texas gives the Tundra all that it can take. Love the Tundra but it is weak with 25 foot or larger trailer.

Has anyone read if Toyota is going to put extendable mirrors on the 07 Tundra. I love my 03, hate the mirrors!

No diesel no Tundra!

Azflycaster has got the other missing/unknown component pegged. Minimum TV specs for me are diesel, hitch receiver and real towing mirrors (as part of the tow package). Oh heck lets go nuts and demand a brake controller too. Having said all that I hope Toyota does it. I would consider a Tundra again if it towed with the MPG my Duramax delivers.

Thumbs down Titan -- 22-24 ft. max!

I have responded to many Nissan Titan/Armada/Pathfinder threads. I was the original Titan owner on the Forums, beginning in Dec '03 just as they were released. (much more detail out there if you use search) Tow capacity sounds awesome, but the max payload with a 4X4 is lucky to exceed 1300-1400 pounds (depending on trim line and some other variables). I could hardly consider my Argosy's tongue weight and a truck cap and the 2 people/2 dogs without exceeding the max payload! Other reasons caused me to upgrade to the Safari but we ended up trading the Titan for a Duramax.

The Titan powertrain is up to the task but I have to say I had difficulty once keeping the tranny temp gauge out of the red -- in 30 degree weather!!!!

Good luck in your quest!

Since the '03 Titan/ Armada came out, Nissan has switched to a finned aluminum plate instead of the steel one used earlier. It provides better cooling by various reports I've read. Apparently several of this forum's members use Titans and Armadas as well and like it.

We've been pulling a 29ft 92 A/S with a 2001 3/4 ton Tundra V8 for about 4 years. It has pulled the TT wherever we wanted to go without any problems. We get 10-11mpg. I will admit, it is not quite as effortless as when we pulled it with the Ford dually 350 7.3 powerstroke diesel. However, the repairs are certainly less numerous and less expensive with the Toyota vs the 350. I have an 06 Land Cruiser but I won't let my husband hitch the A/S to it yet - maybe next year (but probably not). We'll be looking at the 1 ton 08 Tundra due to Toyota reliability.
