2 Stupid Tow Vehicle Questions.

I have a 2013 GMC 2500 Diesel that has been pre-dented for carefree driving. The other day I was backing up in my driveway next to the cabana and noticed that the rear roadside light had waves.... yes, it is half full of water. Is there a semi-easy way to drain it and reseal it, or should I put on my mask and go to the dealership? Do I need to order any gaskets, sealants, etc.

Next, the right side rear bumper step pad blew off. I KNEW it was loose, but procrastinated and it went bye-bye somewhere. Luckily, I was able to locate one on Amazon for a very reasonable price. Question... reinstall with double-sided tape, mechanical fasteners or both? Does not look like rocket science but instructions aren't included.... and I am female so I actually READ instructions.

Thanks in advance. PAULA

A very small drill bit, and drill a hole at the bottom of the lens, so it can drain. If you want it to drain faster, you can drill another hole at the top, and put a dab of glue in the hole when all the water is out.

Terry is right, put a small hole at the lowest point on the bottom of the fixture. If water is getting in, just give it a way to get out. There are a lot of leaky gaskets across the vehicle spectrum.

Replacing gaskets and fixtures just adds up to many dollars spent.

I would use a few fasteners to secure your pad but I would use some DOW CCW or 795 silicon to glue it down to the bumper. If you are stepping on it frequently, the fasteners can work loose and fall out (and probably end up in my tires ) but the silicon will set up and remains pliable and doesn't care about water.

Remove the GMC grill badge and everything behind it.
Replace with blue oval.

Look to your owners manual to find out how to change the bulbs, this will get you access to the light fixture.
I found water in my headlite, I used a hairdryer to vent & purge the moisture, then regreased the O ring that sealed the bulb, after cleaning out the dirt. Common sense will help in figuring out the seal fix depending on what you find.

As to step pad, look to a heavy weatherstrip contact cement, add weight for the cure.

Ah, then it's just be a pile of rust with a blue oval on it.

I have found that Permatex Ultra Black Maximum Oil Resistance RTV Silicone Gasket Maker, 3.35 oz. Tube (Amazon) is fantastic. I use it as a glue and sealer on anything stubborn. I have a 91 Camry with the glass headlight lenses. Those would be very expensive to replace. I took a rock on the right side, like a BB or pellet hole. I put regular silicone in there and it lasted a year.

I got the Permatex Ultra Black on a whim, seemed to look strong, and sealed the right lens. After a year it was still holding. About that time a took a big rock in the left side lens. This as a pretty big gap. Over the course of 3 days I would put some Permatex in the hole then wait a day, put some more in the next day and finished up on the third day. That was the summer of 2012 and the Permatex is still holding strong.

So for your rubber step thingy I would put some of the Permatex on the new rubber pad and on the bumper and press it down.

For your taillight lens, if you can remove the lens then you can get a new gasket for it, probably also on Amazon or local parts store. Drilling a hole is the easy way but may cause rusting later on.

Isn't that the truth! First time you get a dent or scratch it is a relief. Now you don't have to worry about it anymore.

Had that issue all the time when I lived where flooding was common. Issue seemed to be when water splashed from below, heavy rain puddles, etc. it wasn’t caused by regular rain or driving in the rain. Came in around the bulb screw in area but non-hardening goop and grease would melt out in high heat.

Drilled 2 small holes. Because it wasn’t happening every day, seemed like no problem after that.

Similar to the blue oval comment, when I hear of a difficult repair I suggest jacking up the radiator cap and driving a new truck under it. Another option - where the headlight screws into the lens housing - tighten it until you strip it and then back it off 1/4 turn.

Open the tailgate - there are just two screws holding the fixture in.

Each of the lights sockets will detach by turning the back counterclockwise 1/4 turn.

Pick the most convenient one and empty the water. Then you can check the mounting gasket and see where water might be entering.
