1/2 Ton Truck Tow Capacity. Real?

Public relations gimmick or actual increase?

Nissan announces the Titan tow capacity as 9400 pounds. Ford ups the ante and changes their new F-150's tow capacity to 9200 pounds. (Similarly equipped 4WD vehicles.) This link doesn't reflect Ford's revisions. Official Nissan numbers on the Titan are not released that I know of. Sales begin December 1st. The Titan's 3.36 axle ratio combined with the 5-speed's higher top gear are "said" to be equivalent to a 4.1 rear axle (no real numbers again).

This is not a question about the wisdom of buying new models or, in the Titan's case, a new model from a company that has never marketed a 1/2 ton truck. Does anybody know whether these higher numbers reflect an engineered increase in capacity for this class vehicle? Or is the road tests / specifications process accepting a higher level of wear and tear on the truck?

It is hard to accept these numbers on faith until time and experience have gone by. Can anybody offer insight on differences in the F-150 drivetrain and suspension for for 2004 vs. earlier years?

Using the 80% of tow capacity rule, these vehicles would seem to give plenty of margin for the 25 foot Safari or CCD.

Here are the '04 F150 specs and '04 F150 tow ratings.

Here are the "Heritage" F150 specs and tow ratings.

I'll let you make the comparisons... the WC race is on and Junior's in the lead!
