Hi I just wanted to post some pictures showing how I skirted my airstream with 1" styrofoam to help keep floor warmer and to also save on propane cost.

very clear what you have done....

just a suggestion..........
you ask a moderator to change the thread title to "skirting an airstream" or 'skirting secrets revealed' or something similar.

this comes up a lot and folks will be able to find these useful photos more easily.......without looking through the antifreeze/ pipes/ hay bail and other winter issue threads.

did you jack the trailer or is it on the tires/stabilizers?

is there any vent holes or were they not needed? any moisture under there?

2airishuman good point sent message to a moderator to change title. Tires are still on, no vent system for moisture, styro is tucked up under just tight enough to hold in place, is not a perfectly tight seal so it can breath. Back to the moisture on inside of trailer, when the temps hit -20 I had just a little moisture on the very bottom of my curbside vista view window in loung, as far as moisture under mattres'es none, and no other moisture problems thru out trailer, I guess I am one dry fellow, but that is the truth, I do have dualpane glass thruout trailer and also heat ducts to all water tanks, that also makes a big differance..

Probably a stupid question - where can one get long panels of styro like this for skirting?? Home Depot?

I have seen that material at both Home Depot and Lowes.

Wow! I've never seen an Airstream with a dual-pane window option! Didn't even know it was available (other than in Vista Views, of course). Could you take and post some detail photos of the windows and how it was done please?

Dual-pane was standard in the 70's. My 75 has them. It is interesting that mine (except for the vista view

) are clear. The 76's that I looked at all had problems with a layer of tint between the glass that had gone bad. Many of these owners have punched out the inner glass to clean up the window.

David ---nice job!!!---we're going fulltime next year and skirting was an issue i was thinking about should we sometime end up in cold weather. this looks nice, and i would think not real expensive. have seen other attempts that just plane looked trashie. thanks for the idea and picts---pieman

My '70 Safari had standard panes.

That 1 inch foam doesn't look too bad. I' went through last winter (in Virginia Beach, VA) without skirting at all. Used water all winter too, but we didn't have our usual 2 week hard freeze. Did leave a faucet dripping, cabinet drawers open and heater on low.

I do travel even in winter so any skirting I do needs to be easily to remove, store and set up. Of course I also don't want it to be a public eyesore either. I would worry that the duct tape will let go after a while. Other than using the shiny metal tape which has better adhesive, This system seems to work and is certainly light weight.

I'd considered using the foil backed foam insulation and draping it over something like chicken wire, cut to fit the wheelwells and tongue, but this looks lots easier. THANKS

I think the dual pain windows were an upgrade or option. My 75 does not have them and my 80 Excella does.

I could be mistaken that it was a standard feature. It was available in the 70's. When I was looking, every trailer that I looked at (8-10) had double panes. Some you could spot a block away. They had the bad film between the panes.

Might have been a certain dealer or dealers in a certain area ordering all of their trailers with them? Mine was sold orginally in the Carolina's and is still there today

Also from what I can figure mine was ordered without A/C and it was added at the dealer. My trailer was built in May 1975 but the A/C unit is defintely a 1976 model, or it may have been swapped out on warranty? I have never seen a 70's vintage with the dual pane windows, just pictures. I had my hands on a 74 Tradewind for a couple of weeks and it was single pane too.

A few years back I helped set up a friend with skirting he could set up in a few minutes. We used inflatable air dams that he bought at a surplus store for a few dollars each. Seems these are frequently used to block passages in mines and also as smoke barriers in buildings. We inflated about 10 of them around the perimeter in about an hour with a vacuum cleaner and they did the trick. He set up three 100 watt lights underneath and left them on. Maybe you could use inexpensive inflatable pools or inflatable flotation/oil collection collars. Just a thought.

Out of curiosity I went by Home Depot to check out the price of the 1" foam board insulation. It's $9.43 per 4x8 sheet. I think 5 sheets would do my 30' thats $50.00 or so which isn't bad. In cold weather it would probably pay for it's self in propane $$$$. If you travel like Paula this would be a problem as it would need be cut for every RV site. Very unlikely any 2 would be close enough to reuse all of it.-----Pieman

That skirting looks great! I tried the hay bale thing, it was an excellent home for field mice. They loved it.
How did you attach the top of the styrofoam to the actual AS? Was it taped, or did it just fit well enough not to need attaching?
