We just got home from a week out of town. We knew it would freeze while away so we unhooked the water and drained all the lines. Well, we forgot about the water filter. When my hus hooked the water lines up to, my horror black sludge came pouring out from under the sink! Not a pleasant thing to come home to. Who would have thought that would be a possibility in Austin TX? Any suggestions to avoid that next time?

My feeling is that it is best to remove and discard the water filter in the fall and replace it with a new one in the spring.
Activated charcoal filters can develop potentially hazardous bacteria colonies with disuse, when left wet. While it is possible to disinfect them by backflushing with diluted bleach, I don't think it's worth the hassle.

The 150 cartridge, can shatter at any time. It does not have to be frozen necessarily in order to do so.
