suggestions & advice please ! bathroom floor.

hey all, I'm installing a composting toilet next week, so my very original bathroom setup has to go. People think I'm crazy, but I LOVE my green shag and it's everywhere ... even in the bathroom!!
For now I want to keep it still if possible, but with the new toilet, might be the time to remove, just more practical.
Question for 70'S vintage trailer nuts, what would you do? leave in the shag ? or pull out and replace, but with what ? THANKS

shag out

Get rid of the shag. When our carpet gets bad enuff it will be gone. I can see why the AS's now go with the solid floors. You're out camping and all that stuff that is tracked in and can't really get cleaned up til one gets home. Yes I do have a little vacuum. The carpet in our trailer cleans up well, but some day I really want it gone.

The hard part is the carpet goes down first and all cabinets are installed on top of it. But..it has to go in my view, especially near that toilet.
Well that was the case in my 91 vintage anyway.

I know. A majorly project to pull that stuff out. That's why it would have to be a "I can't stand it anymore!!!!" project.

I pulled it out already, it wasn't that hard in fact. When trailer was purchased , I pulled out and replaced the under felt with a thick luxurious pad, thoroughly cleaned flooring and had the carpet professionally cleaned. Looks like brand new! i kinda like it and keeping for now but carpet in bathrooms was just plain silly and must go.

Ack! That carpet has to be pretty darn gross by this point! We try to enforce a no-shoes-inside rule, but still wind up sweeping our bamboo floor (not recommended) almost constantly when camping. I cringe to think about what kind of an archaeological dig that would be if the original shag had remained! Not to mention the moisture-retention factor, and haven for pests.

If you're interested in the retro look, may I recommend the following sites:
https://retrorenovation.com
https://heffrons.com

If the entire bathroom is out, I'd use old-school linoleum for the floor. Not the tiles, but a single sheet. You want to be very careful to seal off the floor, otherwise you'll be dealing with the dreaded bathroom floor rot that plagues so many older Airstreams. Maybe use some heavy duty plastic, like tile setters use in showers, that wraps up the sides (under the interior skin).

My bottom line: go with some sort of resilient flooring, and maybe use some shag throw rugs to get that cool 70s party-pad look. You can always shake them out, or throw them away when they get gross!

I have a 72 Overlander. I pulled the carpet because I read somewhere that after 5 years 30 % or the weight of a carpet is dirt.
