Sheet vinyl under the potty?
I'll be removing some sticky tiles (installed by a PO) in my hallway and installing carpet. I've thought to re-do the bathroom floor while I am in the neighborhood. Currently there are sticky tile squares on the bathroom floor, which was redone at the same time as the hallway.
This is a center bath or perhaps more correctly, a side bath floor plan. The only place to stand in the bathroom, aside from being in the shower, is an area about 18" square.
The previous owner ran their tile up to the front edge of the toilet, which is pretty much jammed into a small area so trying to piece in around the sides of it would have been tough, and that visible bare sub floor to the sides of the toilet don't really stand out.
I plan to install sheet vinyl and thought to pull the toilet, I've done that in the past and its easy, and just cut a hole for the floor flange, and reinstall with a new foam ring.
Wasn't sure if I would need to back out the floor flange, I think it threads into the black tank, half or one full turn to compensate for the thickness of the sheet vinyl, or if the foam ring would be thick enough to provide a good seal.
The toilet is the original Thetford Aquamagic Galaxy, if that matters.

As you can see I never got any responses but I will tell you how this worked out.
I removed the toilet and used a large sheet of paper to make a template for the sheet vinyl. There was some final trimming required and about 1/16" - 1/8" gap was left around the edges. A 2" long strip was left running out the bathroom door as new carpet was going to be put down out there soon.
Right at the base of the shower stall was a metal extrusion with two screws into the sub floor. Cutting flooring around that metal would look odd and the screws would leave visible lumps under the vinyl if covered. I removed the screws, drilled holes in the vinyl for them, and reinstalled them. The two screws look kind of random and might be painted to blend in with the floor, as if I wasn't obsessive on this enough already.
I had cut a large 'donut' or washer out of scrap flooring, which matches the OD and ID of the closet flange seal for the toilet. I put that on the bottom of the toilet first, followed by the seal, to press that seal down further down the same thickness as the floor.
Although the idea of the spacer/washer sounds like a good idea, it was too thick and the seal was not able to compress all the way without having some wobbling of the toilet.
Ended up just putting the toilet on top of the vinyl flooring with the standard closet flange seal, bolted down snug, and all is well.

Nicely done and reported. I'll be doing this soon using 12x12 tiles.

HiJoe, I will offer a bit of unsolicited advice on the vinyl squares. I've done a kitchen and a bathroom in a house with the peel n' stick squares, and gotten some nice looking results.
However, the adhesive on the tiles never seems to hold up and I've always had to go back and stick them back down with a contact cement made for vinyl floors. I can imagine that in a trailer that sits outside exposed to extremes in temperature, the self-adhesive will be even more prone to popping loose.
When you pick up your one box of squares, I suggest you grab a small can of the contact adhesive.

Blickcd,
Thanks for the advice. I'll make sure to get some better adhesive. I'm still torn between squares and sheet. I'll only be covering the box that the toilet and sink base sit on above the black tank. It's 7" high, 40" wide and 20" deep. I can use 12$ worth of square tile or 50$ of sheet. No seams would be nice but the cost difference is tough to justify.

I understand about the cost for the sheet vinyl. When I went shopping for carpet remnants for the bedroom and hallway, I had my eye out for vinyl but found nothing good, or inexpensive.
It was just by luck that I checked craigslist and scored a 5' x 7' sheet for $10, grey and white that would look nice with the original 1979 color scheme.
