1/4" Plywood Underlayment

We plan on some type of glue down vinyl floor covering, at least we are considering it, but not a final decisioin as of yet. I have a glued down vinyl floor covering in my 75 Overlander and it has held up very well the last ten years.

Our 76 Sovereign my friends and I are working on has the infamous 1/2" plywood subfloor. It is in reasonable condition. We are patching and adding support for it here and there. However, it is not good enough for a good floor covering.

The trailer is "gutted" now. We want to lay a 1/4" plywood underlayment on top of the original subfloor. We will use a high quality flat plywood and seal it with polyurethane. We plan on glue and screws to attach it permanently. It will help flatten the floor surface, and it will help strengthen the subfloor a bit. It will also add weight of course. I need 7 sheets of the stuff to cover the area.

We welcome your thoughts and guidance for this aspect of our project trailer.

David

David, when we installed the Marmoleum in both our trailers, the manufacturer required 1/4” plywood on top of the subfloor for their product to be properly installed. Instead of using screws for fear of some of them backing out over time or telescoping thru, we used a pneumatic stapler with narrow gauge staples placed about a foot OC. All seems tight. Good luck

Thank you Bubba L: We are strongly leaning to adding the plywood underlayment. I think there is a plywood designed just for this purpose. It is very smooth on both sides. But our subfloor still has to be as flat as possible. We have to work that problem, maybe with a belt sander across the high spots.
