Vertical mounted shocks ?

Hi All,

Our newly purchased 1966, 28' International Ambassador Landyacht needs new shocks. The shocks look to be "rusted original" and are vertical mounted. Is this correct for the 1966 ? Everything I've read so far on the forum says "horizontal"
mounted shocks. I don't see signs of any modifications so I'm assuming vertical mounted shocks were stock for this vintage ? Does anyone have a part # for my needed shocks ?

Not sure when they went horizontal but my 61 has vertical shocks

The modern Airstream shocks will work vertically. Our '63 had Monroe shocks, but the numbers were so rusty it was impossible to read them

Vertical shocks were used on the 1968 models and older.

The 1969 and newer models, to this day, use horizontal shocks.

Airstreams horizontal shocks work equally well when positioned vertical.

However, the distance between the two shock studs must not be greater than 14.5 inches.

If it is greater, then cut the vertical bracket in half, over lap it and weld it back together, so that the distance is no more than 14.5 inches between the studs.

Or, mount new studs on the frame, duplicating the new style.

Or you can use non-Airstream shocks on vertical installations.There are many choices. I used a non-Airstream shocks with great results on my '66 Overlander. Knowing the mounting types and the compressed and extend dimension is all that is needed for many supply houses fpr shocks.
