What a joy to stumble across this thread and see what an incredibly creative mind and craftsman can do with an Airstream.

I have been wondering what to coat my roof with. Bus Kote it is with 2 coats of clear. Thanks!

I completely agree.

I am so thankful for Air Forums. Because of it we learn about this incredible Airstream and others that are out there along with their very talented owners.

Here's my layout. Kept the last two added batteries close and most critical - kept all +/- cable lengths the same. Braced all lateral motion with angle iron. The weight keeps them held down.

Dan,

Search forums a bit BEFORE you do clear coats over white BusKote...I recall a recent article that discussed this.

BusKote noted that clear coat eventually yellows, and prevents re-coating with fresh white--the white will not stick to the clear. They suggested just leaving the clear coat off, and refreshing occasionally.

See if you can find the thread...

Will do a search. Thanks for pointing this out. I sure wouldn’t want to put anything over the BusKote that would prevent me from recoating it.

Flexi-Clear is completely non-yellowing, highly resistant to water, road salt, tar, oily grime and its natural hydrophobic film is easy to clean and maintain.

Thanks for documenting and posting this wonderful re-do. I'm at the beginning of the same journey and will benefit from your efforts. Again, thanks.

I know this was a couple years ago, but i recently bought a grizzly for my airstream as well. Did you have trouble getting insurance with a fireplace in yours? I'm a little worried no one will be willing to cover me.
Thanks!

To be honest I haven't gotten it insured yet. Procrastinating. Many people have them in their tiny homes and quite a few in their trailers. I don't expect it to be a problem. You'll love the fireplace!

When you are obtaining insurance they typically don’t ask you if you have a fireplace in your Airstream. I don’t think it will be a problem.

freezer and fridge

i am super intrigued with your choice of fridge and freezer. Would you be willing to add some additional information about your choice? I'm also trying to keep it as open as possible and it seems like being able to have them not take up as much height would be very beneficial

Whynter FM-85G 85-Quart Portable Refrigerator/Freezer, Platinum https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002W8GV8S..._yqawBbCJ94FAX

They are 12vDC or 110vAC. Fast freeze to -8 work as either fridge or freezer. You don't lose cooling when opening like on a stand up.

I know you use solar, but how much energy do these take to keep them operational during realistic use? I want the option of boondocking but haven't decided if I want solar yet. Would these drain batteries ridiculously fast? Thanks for all of the information! I love your set up!

The forum is a love/waste relationship for me. When I sign on to look up threads on a current project (water heater in this case) the search inevitably gets hijacked by . Love reading and learning from others experience/ waste a lot of time doing it. Is there a help group for this?
Thanks Pygmypoacher for taking the time over the years to continue to upgrade your very beautiful and unique AS and for answering all the questions that your creativeness generates.

We have a 65 qt Dometic fridge that we have in our Tundra when we camp in the Airstream or my Golf when I go solo tent camping. When it is running I believe it uses about 50 watts of power. I don’t believe it is practical to operate it without solar.Click image for larger version
