What is the inner skin coated with?

I was wondering what the inner skin is coated with? It looks like some sort of plastic fabric. Is there any way to get rid of the oily film on the stuff? I was wondering if 409 would work.

Graffiti remover, solvents, big-box store spray detergents - nothing worked as well or as cheaply as the $3 'Spic 'N Span' All Purpose Cleaner liquid.

I've tried everything and found spic'n span diluted 1:1 and a bristle scrub brush worked the best. Once I had found the rounded 4" nylon brush I could chuck in a drill it all got much easier. After scrubbing, wipe dry with terry cloth towels and then a clear water wet towel rinse.

Perry.

The wall covering is a "vinyl" that's bonded to the aluninum.

Spic and span is a good cleaner, if you use a lot of elbow grease with it.

After it's clean, you might want to apply a couple of coats of "Future floor acrylic" to it.

You will be amazed of how great it will look.

You can roll it on, spray it on, or brush it on.

Every grocery store sells it.

After it's on, all you need to do is just wash an area, since it's good enough for kitchen floors.

We had great success with "Superclean" degreaser. It was once sold by Castrol, but not now. One can get it at Wal-Mart. It is packaged in a purple gallon jug. We used it full strength in a spray bottle and wiped it off with a damp rag.

We did apply the Future Floor product after cleaning, as Andy suggests.

Regards,

How does your interior look with that Future floor acrylic on it?

If you like it, how about a photo for others?

Krud cutter. Can get it at Walmart. I spray on the Krudcutter, wipe off, the wash with simple green and water, then dry. Use terry cloth towels. Works.

Thumbs up Cleaning

I just washed our entire inside down with a product called "Oil Eater". Did a fantastic job of getting rid of all the old airborne grease that had built up on the unit over the years. Very easy to use. Walls and ceiling look like new. Highly recommend it. Got it through Amazon, about $12 for a 32 oz spray bottle but it is diluted before use so that will last a while.

It's called Zolotone. And cleaning the oily residue off of it wasn't enough for me. A couple gallons of Klean Strip from home depot and about 60 hours of labor will have your interior down to the bare aluminum leaving no memory of the grimey faded yellow zolotone.

My Zolotone is not in bad shape overall. Not bad enough for me to want to strip it. It seems to be pretty durable stuff. My entrance door has some sort of permanant stain on it and I may strip that.

Wash with TSP & water, wipe with clean cotton towel. Westley's whitewall tire cleaner works too but TSP is nicer to work with by far.

Apply with Scotch-Brite sponge.

What is the inner skin coated with?

As a point of clarification, I believe that ZolaTone was last used in 1964 or 1965. ZolaTone is a paint product that has a multi-color spatter finish similar to what was utilized in the trunks of automobiles in the 1970s and before. This product produces a very hard finish and can be quite difficult to strip from the panels.

Beginning sometime in 1965 or 1966, a product called vinyl-clad aluminum was utilized on interior panels and continued for more than a decade. This vinyl remains attached to the aluminum with voracity . . . removal is quite a chore. One of the chief complaints about the vinyl-clad is that its surface becomes sticky over time . . . cigarette smoke, cooking byproducts, and adhesives all have been named as potential sources of the sticky residue. The residue can be cleaned with any number of grease cutting cleaners . . . then a coat of Future Acrylic Floor Wax can be utilized to keep the sticky residue from reappearing for an extended period of time. The entire interior of my '78 Argosy Minuet 6.0 Metre is made utilizing vinyl-clad aluminum and the cleaning process followed by the Future coating has been a success in keeping my interior free of the sticky residue.

I suspect the sticky/oily film is plasticizer used in the vinyl. It is amazing this stuff lasts as long as it does.

Zolotone was last used by Airstream in the 1964 models.

In the 1965 models, they switch to the "vinylclad" interior aluminum.

For the vinyl laminated walls, the film of vinyl is the same as vinyl wallpaper used in some bathrooms. The film needs to be flexible and therefore must have plasticizer added to the formulation. unfortunately that plasticizer degrades with time at temperature and starts to become incompatible with the vinyl resin and therefore starts to "spew". This is a common problem with all old flexible vinyls. The above posts detail a number of cleaners the members have found effective and the Future acrylic wax helps seal in the remaining plasticizer. I think this may be a permanent fix but if the sticky again develops, you can always strip the Future, reclean, and recoat..

I have seen those floor coatings yellow over time. Is that a concern that you will have even more stuff to deal with down the road?

I had a 78 that was very sticky and covered with no-see-um bugs, tried at least 7 products that people swore by! Tried brillo pads with some success, then tried Krud Kutter with GREAT success! I am sure every case is a little differant. I had a second 78 that was in great shape and any of the products would have cleaned. Good Luck!

All organic materials age with time. The yellow discoloration will vary with the product formulation and the amount of sunlight it gets. Future is pretty stable, but you can strip it 10 or 15 years down the road, if you think it is necessary. I would prefer to have a little yellow than sticky ceilings and walls.

Perry.

No one has ever reported that the Future acrylic ever discolored in 40 years.

So, I would have to say, no worry.

I have stripped the vinyl off of my overhead bin cabinet doors. The vinyl came off pretty easily but left a lot of adhesive on the wood. I was going to stain and finish the doors, but I need to get the adhesive off. I tried goo gone and it did nothing. I've heard of WD 40 but haven't tried it yet. Anyone have a majic solution to this adhesive? BTW, the PO of my trailer painted the interior vinyl with an exterior latex paint and it looks good, no sticky or anything. Just need to get this adhesive off the wood cabinet doors! Help!!
