Sharing my custom safari 28ft build
Hello, i just wanted to share my custom build i did on a 2007 28ft safari. All the woodwood working and design i did myself over an 18 monrh period ( which i thought would take 3 months lol). But as i started designing i added all kinds of complicated angles hexagons and 45s making the design and process of the build more complicated. The theme is geometry with a hexagon influence.
Her name is now Starbuck, named after kara thraces character in battle star galactica. I want to have custom aluminum exterior emblems with her new name made at some point. Any leads?
I put a lot of thought into the shapes and how to utlize 45 degree angles to increase counter, table, and cabinet space while maximizing movement and floor space.
Some of the design materials: The dinnete table is laser eteched alder wood. All other cabinets are walnut, faces are solid walnut, sides are veneer plywood. Floors are engineered 3/8" European oak.The counters and shower walls are corian. I had the shower walls cnc routed to give the look of tile, and to reduce the weight, no morter needed and the wall is completely waterproof. African teak for the back wall and bench to add warmth. I added 4 windows, 1 in the bathroom to open up and give light, same in the shower, 2 in the kitchen office area where the hanging cabinet used to be. Massive deep kitchen sink ( why are the sinks in airstreams so small?) Pull out pantry with divisions to hold all items, no need to strap anything in) I utilized drawers in the bedroom as opposed to the standard closet hangers ( those are such an absolute waste of space). I can now fit 2 large suitcases of clothes on each side bed cabinets. Over all i estimate i increased tha storage space by 3 times what it was from stock! Also a pull out large garbage and recyling bin (airstream omitted putting space for garbage bin in the cabinetry, why???). 800 watts solar up top. 200 watt suitcase in storage. 60amps dc to dc charging system to hook up to truck on rainy or shady campsites. 300amp hr battle born lithium battery system with 2000 watt inverter. 2 heaters, stock and a propex to save energy and less noise while sleeping. 2 fantastic fans to pull air through the trailer, dont even need ac on 95 degree days! Indirect led lighting above cabinets and under countertop edges. This is one of my favorite simple features, it highlights the beautiful shapes and textures of the airstream and walnut and gives it a very warm home vibe. I don't even bother using the mini can lights anymore.
For those that will say you added so much weight... Id didnt actually and i was very thoughtful about materials and balance. For example the lithium battery system was moved off the tounge and transfered over the axles to match the weight of the shower walls added on the opposite axle, also reducing my tounge weight slightly and giving better weight distribution. Overall fully loaded with gear and all tanks full,im im right below max GVWR. She still towes beautifully and balanced.
So just wanted to share, as i thought some people in here would appreciate the hard work i put into her

BR before restoration. Plus some rot the original seller hid with a tarp in the rear storage area. My stupidity for not looking under the tarp and supplies, but none the less a very dishonest thing to do. But in the end im glad it was there so i could permanently fix the water leak issue cause the design flaw on the rear bumper.

Battery and charging systems. I added some much wiring its borderline ridiculous, especially for long runs for the solar and batteries a lot of 1/0 cable was used.

You did a most excellent job it looks stunning and totally custom. Really like the single seat next to the desk and the shower is fantastic.
Congratulations and shame on the PO for their deception.

Incredible craftsmanship! Could you provide more detail on the design flaw in the rear bumper area. Have been constantly dealing with this issue (2004 Safari) to no avail.
Thnx.

Beautiful
Creative, timeless. A Frank Lloyd Wright inspired Airstream!! Surprised it took just 18 months given the amount of thought and work that you put into this. It is beautiful.

A) when I was still in shopping mode, I passed over a lot of trailers that had soft spots; but most people were forthcoming about their soft floors. That’s disappointing that someone hid that instead of disclosing such.
B ) I don’t want to offend anyone else, but I usually prefer a ‘stock’ camper, don’t care for a lot of custom jobs… however, yours is on my exception list, that is truly remarkably done, yours is beautifully executed. Well done.

Sharing my custom safari 28ft build
Jackvosney,
Looks fantastic! In response to your question about naming your rig. We had a name plate riveted on near the door with our name. Our dealer had this option for us. We absolutely love it. [ATTACH]

Wow. We used to have the same trailer
The before pictures match our 2008 Safari almost perfectly. I have been debating how much renovation to do (the carpet in the bedroom has to go). You might have pushed me to do a full renovation. Fortunately, we store our AS in a garage so I am hoping we have no rot.
