I got my parents 1970 Safari Twin Deluxe Land Yacht (23 foot) with all original equipment. The iron bars holding in the "brown" water tank and the floor boards in the bathroom are all rotted. I am starting to take apart the bathroom to get to the bad flooring and was going to toss all the large molded plastic pieces. Who needs a tiny bathtub in a trailer?

However, the first thing I read on this forum is "don't throw anything away". Does that apply for all this old stuff too? Eventually, I am hoping to gut the whole thing, but right now I am just trying to make it useable. So the flooring, fridge and maybe the hot water heater.

Yes you might want to keep it. Are you planning on doing the bathroom in the same place? If so you might be able to use the pieces as patterns.

I'm sure someone out here will want the if you don't.

Also, if they are not broken, they can be refinished by painting them.

I would post photos of what you are getting rid of, you would be surprised what some people treasure, I doubt the host water heater and flooring is worth saving. Someone might want the fridge. BTW if the 70 has the original Suburban NT 28A furnace it was recalled long ago because of carbon monoxide leaks.

BTW/ I remember dumps before they became sanitary landfills. I would often return with more than I left with, not to mention drive in entertainment watching the bears.

Also going to remove the original hot water heater, space heater, and refrigerator. Didn't really try to see if they work, but probably not.

One question, assuming I am not doing any serious off the grid winter camping, is the heater necessary? Can't I just use some electric space heaters?

It's your trailer you can use whatever you choose. But having only electric heat is limiting.

I would keep the furnace. It along with a good electric heater equal a comfortable on grid winter excursion. I went back with a rooftop with heat strip that keeps the interior comfortable until the outside temperature drops below about 40. Below 40 the furnace kicks on occasionally to maintain 68 to 70 inside.

A big problem with those old appliances is finding a tech who is able/ and or willing to work on them. Techs are unwilling to work on them for liability reasons and parts are not available. If you do find someone to do the work, it is expensive and you may be better putting the money into new. The exception may be the fridge which you can have rebuilt if it looks good, but it will cost you $300 to $500.

In regards to the furnace, many people are going with Catalytic heaters instead of a furnace. They have no fan, so they are great for boon docking.

We live in Fl and camp in sites with power. We use an electric oil filled radiator heater. Works great for cold Fl days.
