Okay, what the heck is it?
Our 310 classic moho has this, uh, thing just inside the door. Can someone tell me what the heck it is and what its theoretical use would be? It looks like it got hit with the ugly stick in the last interior redo--lovely cushioned purpley-red upholstery to match the dinette cushions and upper cabinet accents and some yucky brown felt to line the inside of it. Plus lots of riveted snaps to attach the side fabric (where's my drill bit??).
 
It has been absolutely useless to us and I have now removed the door and will be replacing the felt with a sign (framed in barnwood) to fit the new bunkhouse interior decor. It is the perfect size to fit in the shallow indentation.

That was a rare and expensive option.
It was discussed at lenght in Sabastian Wheatabix's "Complete history of the Classic Airstream Coach." I refer you to pages 698 to 712.
Sadly the only copy published was destroyed in a fire.

We always kept our maps and atlas, gloves, and flashlight in there when we still had our '82 310. Don't know if that was it's was suppose to be used for but it was convenient for us. I like your idea of putting the barnwood sign in there though. Post pictures when you get it done.

I can understand keeping some sort of paperwork or gloves in this one, but there is no room for a flashlight in it. Closed, it probably had 1" of depth inside it, maybe a tiny bit more.
There is also a space on the right side of the door, on the back of the dinette, that has a fabric pouch with an elastic top on it. That one would hold a flashlight and such, and I might consider making a new pouch (it's the same unfortunate material as the other thing) and using it for things like a flashlight and bug spray--stuff we would want near the door.

Maybe it's for storing note paper and push pins for use with that very cool cork board above it Will the hinge still function after you add the sign?

Oh, no. I have removed the whole thing, including the hinge. What I am left with is an open indentation in the formed wall that will be a perfect niche to house the aforementioned sign.
I do like the corkboard, even though I doubt we will ever use it. It might be a good place to post the racing schedule when we go vintage racing.
