Mystery compartment behind toilet in 70's trailers

When I took my trailer apart for the eventual rebuild, there was a shallow compartment in the cabinetry immediately behind the toilet. As I look at trailer pics from vintageairstream.com, I see that there was probably a backrest (which mine no longer had) that covered that compartment.

I assume the compartment was for storing TP or reading materials--am I wrong in this assumption? Anyone out there have more detailed pics?

thanks!

Yes there was a compartment in there, if I remember correctly it had a fold down door, with spring hinges to keep it closed.

Airstream called it a clothing hamper. Our 73 Safari had one too. We removed ours as it takes up a bit of space and if you install a replacement toilet, there may not be enough room for the lid to stay up.

It was called laundry hamper & had removable cloth laundry snapped in. my 76 still has as I pur. new in 76, I never use this feature as have pop up mesh bag placed in tub for dirty clothes etc. This factory hamper does not hold very much.
