International Sink Cover/Cutting Board
The round plastic sink cover/cutting board in the late model Internationals is very nice. However, when the cover is on the sink you can't use the faucet. Or, when it's off you lose a great deal of counter space. I'm thinking about either cutting a hole in the middle of it or slicing a piece off one of the edges. This mod would permit the cover to be in continuous use and yet, give access to the faucet.
Has anybody already tried this?

There’s an airstream sponsored blog about your idea. It sounds like your plan will work for what you’re trying to do. The blog is referring to a wooden cutting board, but solving the same problem you’re trying to.

I would look to replace w/wood. I don't no why AS would use plastic for cover [cutting board] as plastic breeding ground for germs. AS is high end and high cost but scrimp w/plastic?

We never could find a use for that plastic cover. So our solution was a bamboo cutting board that partially covers the sink. It allows us to run the water and, most importantly, put our coffee cups in the sink with out removing it.

I made it but I could have a local cabinet shop copy it. But I would recommend Oak or Maple.
Bamboo is too fussy

Thanks I can have that done locally, use the plastic one as a template have a local guy do something. I don’t have the tools or the talent.

I can make you a nice cutting board for $80 plus shipping from exotic hardwoods. You would have to send me the original so that I could copy the shape. PM me if interested.

Our 2020 Globetrotter has a 2 piece cover with cutouts on each half which solves the problem of using faucet and chopping. An added benefit is leaving only one half in place if I need more sink access. Works great.
You should be able to modify your cover similarly.

We bought one made to fit. There is a man that custom makes them out of Walnut. They used to be on Amazon.

Sink cover mod
Yup, after using our trailer for 2 years, [and having the cover stored most of the time for access to the sink] I finally convinced DH to cut of 6" of the white cover. Love it now and use it all the time for extra food prep space. After having it bounce out and fall on the floor once on a bumpy road, we store it under the mattress when going down the road. Also, we found a stainless sink grid made by Elkay that fits the round sink perfectly-makes extra pot & pan drying space.

Cutting Boards
Years ago, the government advised against using wooden cutting boards, saying they were more difficult to keep hygienically clean than plastic cutting boards. Recent (2018) research, however, shows that a wood cutting board is no more likely than a plastic one to harbor harmful bacteria. So cleaning with mild bleach solution is important either way. Getting a harder wood (or harder plastic) will help reduce fissures (from knife cuts) that can harbor bacteria.
IF you do decide to cut off a piece of the plastic cutting board, the shape of the cut-off piece is important as the almond shaped smaller (cut off) piece can be cut at an angle such that it will fit back in place (covering the whole round sink without falling through) when you’re not using the faucet. Pretty sure the link to the company that the Airstream blog recommends (the beautiful round wood cutting boards), also provides the cut off, almond shaped piece for this dual purpose.
Lastly, we used a 3M Command hook on the wall next to the sink to store our round (plastic) cutting board in the upright position with the edge of the cutting board just touching the counter. It has traveled in this position many miles (without falling) when I’ve forgotten to put it back on the sink.

Can you share what tool you used to modify the cutting board? Can the plastic be cut with a regular handheld jig/saber saw or a bandsaw? Did the cut require a special blade? Thanks in advance for your reply.

We ordered one of these 2 years ago and love it! We purchased the dark Walnut. He hand makes these. They have gone up in price but he does quite a few at once, I think and if I remember right, he owned an Airstream. No need to send anything in.... he knew just which size we needed and it fit great.

DH borrowed a friends band saw. The edge needed a little smoothing with sandpaper after the cut.
