Very nice Stef! Well done! Hope it works as well as it looks.

Thumbs up

Stefrobrts, That looks great! Beside gaining counter space it looks right at home on your stove top.

Whoops!

What I really ment to say was seal the penetrations through the floor. Caulked from the inside.
Sealing the outside (Belly Pan) works to a point. The floor up is the most effective.

Sorry

Do you think the dust could be coming in from the AC unit while traveling?

Maybe something like this may help:

A/C cover

No AC unit on ours, the window seals are new, and the floor is all caulked around the few places where drains pass through it (the water system is entirely above the floor in our trailer). I don't know where the dust could be getting in, except it is particularly grungy around the plastic wheelwells, so I would suspect that is a prime suspect. Still, both wheelwells are contained under cabinets, so how come when I take a trip I have to brush all that dust off the table and counters? You'd think it was a regular dust-storm in there while travelling! That's why I was wondering if it was insulation in the ceiling that was disintegrating and drifting through the cracks to cover everything in the trailer.

steph

try pulling the wheels and spray the entire wheel well with aerosol undercoating, you may seal all of the seams and stop the dust.

the stuff is cheap, about 3 bucks a can. can't hurt to give it a try!

Lightbulb Other possible entry points for dust:

  • Bottom of door - ours doesn't have moulding there
  • Fan hood above the stove
  • Fridge vent
  • Furnace/heater vent
  • Skylight vent @ roof

Dust Suck

Just had something very interesting happen about an hour ago.
I was outside reinstalling the water heater drain plug getting ready for the Mini-Rally, when Janet left the trailer and closed the door. When she did, a giant gust of wind which was caused by her closeing the door came out of a vent hole on the heater face plate. Checked it out and it is a big dust suck right into the trailer.
Check it out on yours, just have someone close the door while you have your head in the heater compartment.
I think I'll try and see if I can seal it up later.

That's what I found where some of the road dirt get's in and water heater compartment. A appears to be a daunting task to really seal them well from the breezes. Since I have a empty battery box I think I'll put a 12 volt high volume muffin fan in there and use the rest of the battery box as a HEPA filter, keeping a positive pressure inside the AS while in tow. It will take a while to engineer and test but I'll post the results for everyone.

legitimate tip from Fantastic Vent

Don't know if this would come in handy for anyone but here's a tip I received from the Fantastic Vent representative. On the dustiest roads put the vents on intake, the current created will force air out all those openings that would normally bring in dust clouds from the road. He said he knew of travelers to Alaska doing such a thing. Fact or fancy, hype or not, I wonder about the reality of it, but that's what I was told.

Just a thought. Having just becoming up close and personal with the area beneath the fridge, let me tell you that is a nasty, dust collecting hole. What would keep that from bringing dust in?
