Hello all,
Yesterday I finally got to work on the Safari. I finished pulling the last of the carpet, the wardrobe closet and the desk cabinet out. I also pulled the furnace. I know the history behind the old Suburbans but still want to offer parts if somebody wants them. I also am unsure if I'll use either of the gaucho's. I'd rather not throw these parts away. Here are some pics.

I'm doing the basics. Bunk beds on each side in the middle. Dinette up front. I guess I'll take the inner skins off then go after the belly pan. I haven't decided if I'll patch the bad spots or start replacing whole sheets and working my way back. I did find a couple of soft spots along the exterior wall but the rest of the floor is solid.

I took off the lower front skins this evening and figured it would be best to change the two front sheets of ply wood. I also found evidence of previous skin repair. More pics

well at least the damage doesn't appear to be too bad. Any luck on the source of the leak at the first seam?

Aaumpine, If you don't get rid of the whole gauchos I could use the gaucho sliders, especially the white plastic parts if they are not worn out.

I could also use the under gaucho and other plastic trays for extras.

I think the leak is coming from my front vent.

Let 's see if I use them or not and if anyone might take them as a whole. Any taker's on the wardrobe and cabinet. Wer'e only 25 minutes from New Orleans.

With my oldest daughter's baseball coming to an end I finally was able to spend some time on the Airstream. Axles are due in at the end of the week. My wheels are waiting to be picked up with 5 new tires. I plan on camping this month. I won't have any plumbing but we'll be camping. Our annual trip to Arkansas starts as soon as my daughters final tournament ends.

Got a call today from my resident axle guy. My axles came in a day early so I put them as soon as I got home. No drilling, a perfect fit. I love it when a plan comes together. I ordered last Thursday evening and recieved them In a few hours short of a week. We'll be camping next week!!!! I still have to connect my brake wires but I did not have wire nuts. I think I also have to check if the brakes are set and shoot some more grease.
Just to be fair I will say they are Dexters and they went on with out drilling of any sort. To keep peace I won't quote price or size.

Our maiden voyage went with out a hitch. We went from south Louisiana to west Arkansas.I towed almost 1000 miles round trip with a grin on my face. In all of my years and several different sob's it was and still is hard to explain to non airstreamers how well they tow. There was no sway at any time. On the way home I didn't use the anti-sway bar at all. Still no sway.
We saw several other airstreams on the trip. We got waves from all. I talked to a fellow who was stopped at a supermarket in Glenwood Arkansas. He was towing a 1974 tradewind. He was not aware of the forums but I filled him in.

I came so close to the Henschens but in the end I went with the Dexters. I was prepared to drill but they were a perfect fit. The hardest part was taking them out of the truck myself. Here's a little better picture. Not a great pic but better.

Did you use an air cut off wheel and cut the old bolts out? I hear you can't get an impact wrench up in there at the correct angle. I'm helping a guy put in a pair of axles in a few weeks.

I put my back up on the wheel side and used my impact from the inside. It worked great. If your going with Dexters make sure you find hardware before you start. Not everybody carries grade 8, .625 fine thread bolts and nuts.

Congratulations on your first trip and pleasant camping experience. It is fun to meet other Airstreamers as we travel. It looks like the kids are really enjoying the camping trip.
