'70 Sovereign Bathroom Remodel

Does anybody have any experience removing that fiberglass shell in the rear bath area of a '70's era airstream? I'm doing a DIY remodel and would like to convert this area from bath to bedroom. I originally thought that I may be able to work around this shell but it's pretty hideous and gross all these years later.

I'd love to hear from anyone that might have some ideas for the area or any experience with removing that shell.

Do you mean the big quarter-dome thing that forms the interior ceiling (known as an interior end-cap)?

If so, the removal is fairly straight forward, just remove everything that is attached to it, then remove every rivet that holds it in place, and it will fall right down on you. The problem, as I recall, is that when they assemble the interior skins of these trailers, the plastic end-cap are the first things to go in, and all of the interior aluminum skins overlap the end-caps. Thus you may have to remove, or at least loosen up several of the everlapping interior skins to get to rivets hidden underneath them.

Make sure you support the end cap as you are bringing it down, because as gross as it may seem at the moment, you might conclude, as many of us have, that making a replacement is easier said than done, and you can't buy one new.

The challenge with replacing these caps is that there are no "ribs" behind it. So it is supported completely by the edges. Anything you replace it with will be a real confluence of art and engineering. Colin Hyde was talking about selling kits to make your own segmented aluminum interior end-caps, but I never heard whether these kits are available yet, or how much they cost.

Anyway, removal (and reinstallation) is a common operation to any of us who have replaced insulation or wiring. Not rocket science, just a lot of work, and a two man job.

good luck!

Thanks for the info. I've got a few ideas about what I might replace the end-cap with but right now it's all pure speculation as I haven't actually taken it down yet.
