1971 Trade Wind --> Mobile Glass Art Gallery
Hello everyone-
I have been learning a lot from the forums, and thought it was about time I started to contribute...
I am converting a 1971 Airstream into mobile art gallery for emerging glass artists. I thought I'd post the conversion here to share as well as get some feed back, ask questions...etc...
There is a post about mobile galleries if you are interested

Hmm.....so what are your plans for the interior for the AS? Are you gutting it totally? Although I kind of cringe at the idea of you totally modifying a vintage aristream at the same time I cant help but like the idea for your plans. I'm all for art! Keep us updated on your progress and where you are going with this.

Did you guys retain any of the components, eg, the extrusions that fit the bulkheads to the inside wall? I'm always in need of those, since I did redid the interior of my Overlander with 1/2" maple bulkheads and much more storage.
Would it be possible to visit this week?

the interior plans...In short:
Floors: Bamboo ( http://www.4windsbamboo.com) with polished Al cabinet runners. Unsure about the edge molding at this time.
Walls: Brushed Al with painted Al molding to hide the seams
End Caps: painted. I am leaning towards a light grey blue
Cabinets: Light wood. high down the length and low at the end.
Counter tops: Dark, maybe wood, maybe fake granite...heavy ;( The rear counter top will be lit from the under side
Lighting: Flexible monorail. I was thinking cables but I am worried about the bouncing.
Exterior: mirror polish...of course...

Sounds like a great idea!
Being a fellow Coloradan and huge art glass fan (and minor collector) I'd love to check out your studio when it's up and running! I love the concept of a shiny jewel displaying shiny jewels!
A few things you may have already thought of, but I didn't see mentioned in your earlier posts.
I would think you would want to be sure the running gear is 100% before loading it up with glass artwork!
A couple of reasons, first is everything balanced so the trailer (& cargo) runs smoothly down the road? A '71 trailer is possibly on the verge of needing a new axle. If your axle/shocks/bearings are in need of repair/replacement and nothing is done, the results could be tragic to the artwork.
Secondly, I would be concerned about the weight of all that glass. You don't say if you are intending on hauling lots of glass in the trailer or in the tow vehicle or ???, but if large heavy pieces are packed in the trailer during travel, you may be pushing the limits on your current axle rating. If you are planning on replacing it, you may want to up-size it accordingly.
Like I said, you may have already thought of these, but I would hate to see this overlooked with disastrous results...and lots of angry artists!
I know, camping-wise, I only pack & use "unbreakables" inside our trailer...

Thought of it...well, I am on the forums for two reasons.
First (selfishly) to learn, and get advise and ideas from others
Secondly, to share...so that I don't feel so guilty about the first reason
So, please feel free
How do I tell if the axle needs replacing? Should I take it to a mechanic? Any recommendations on where I could take it?
Currently my tow vehicle is a Mazda P5
I am looking to 3/4-ton cargo vans. I agree that it would be safer to have the art in the van rather than the Airstream.

Stripping
Ok, the past few days my friend Adam and I have been stripping the vinyl off the walls...
At first we tried a wire brush and drill.
Then I called Andy at Inland RV...Thank you! Thank you! It took us a while to get it down but we used the Aircraft Stripper in the blue can. It worked very well, but was kinda messy.
Before (well sortof, this after I painted it... long story)
Adam painting on the stripper
It worked well
I was able to just peel it off. I cut it with a razor as I went. The vinyl is pretty elastic so go slow. When it snaps is sprays the stripper...bad news
It leaft the glue behind. So right now my airstream is gold...? Does anyone know how to get that off? I have been wire brushing it off with 3" medium brush on a 4" grinder. It is slow going though...
Whatcha think?

Looks like a lot of swirls in the aluminum, will you be leaving it that way? There must be a solvent which will cut that adhesive. What have you tried?

Almost everything is in storage. I post complete list with some picture tomorrow night. I sold the beds to a man restoring a 197# airstream. I still have the entire bathroom, kitchen, fridge, oven and hot water heater...All in public storage

I really like the swirls. I need to go back and smooth them up a bit with a softer brush. Over all I am pretty happy with them. Should I coat the Al with something?
The current plan is to replace the very top with shiny new Al or cover it with a pressed tin ceiling. I love those presed tin ceiling in old victorian homes. http://www.heritageceilings.com.au/t...s-patterns.htm I like Paddington (D) and Ripple (P) (scroll down to the bottom)
As far as stripping off the glue, I have tryed mineral spirits, aircraft stripper, and GooGone...nothing. I found a few forums that talked about using lacquer thiner and Jasco Paint and Epoxt remover. (#2625-2). I will try that this week and report back. It seemed pretty succesful for them.

Go with the swirls
Definitely go with the swirls. One technique to create "fake" engine turning swirls is to us a piece of peg board to shoot a spray paint pattern (a matrix of dots)-you can then use the dots as a guide for a rotary sanding disc to make overlapping swirl patterns.
Do a net search for "engine turning" and you can see the beutiful patterns.

Stipping the Glue...
I did some glue stripping today...
The Jasco worked well. I scrubbed at it with a synthetic steal wool for a few minutes before wiping it off with a damp rag. I let it sit for about 30 minutes before scrubbing.
Nasty stuff, but it is working.
There is some better info here: http://www.airforums.com/forum...ighlight=vinyl

Update: mastercard style
First trip to Home Depot:
Steal Wool, small metal pale, 5 gallon rinse bucket, epoxy brush...
Stripping the glue, and sanding the interior - ~15 hours
Second trip to Home Depot:
Roll of brown papper, calking, calking gun, spong
Getting ready to mask for painting ~ 4 hours (includes cleaning time)
Third trip to Home Depot:
one roll of blue tape...becuse I forgot to get it last trip...
Masking the arch ~ few hours
Forth trip to Home Depot:
One more roll of blue tape...because that should surely be enough...
Fifth trip to Home Depot
Time to contemplate how 3M gets so little tape on such a seemingly big role...
Arriving at Home Depot 10 minutes after closing...admittedly a bit relieved

You guys should mix it up a little. A trip to Home Depot next to Lowes. I think I saw a Lowes just South of Bolder off of Rt 36 last year.

I am not one to give $ advice, but maybe you should get a few shares of Home Depot too.
Oh, and maybe a share or two of Lowes...Just in case.

Good luck on your project. Being a "purist", I'm cringing. I can only hope that the parts you've taken out get put to good use. Owning an Airstream is what makes us so unique. I've never seen anyone strip out an SOB and do what you're doing, so kudos to you.
