Hi All,
I'm in the process of a complete gut/overhaul/remodel of a
1968 Sovereign. I think if I knew all the headaches this would lead to before I started I would not have had the courage to take it on, but my hands are dirty now so we're plowing ahead.
My question today is about the rack operators (window cranks) for these 1966-1968 Airstream windows. Several of my original operators are totally worn out and bent and hard as hell to crank. A quick internet search produced replacements available from various sources. I initially purchased replacements from Inland RV (I don't like dealing with those people as I find there customer service to be horrendous but VintageTrailerSupply was out of stock). So I installed them, which was easy enough, but the materials and workmanship were so cheesy that the gears were completely mangled and inoperable after just a few times cranking open/closed. But then a few weeks later VintageTrailerSupply had them in stock so, being ever hopeful, I decided to give theirs a whirl. Same story. Obviously manufactured by the same chinese contractor. I'm stumped now trying to figure out a window opening solution that will not cost a fortune. I am throwing this out there to all of you ingenious and indomitable airstream geeks in hopes that one of you has a brilliant answer to my dilemma.
